i've driven one a few times. great car to drive.

pros:
- fuel economy
- nice to run on electric motor in most cases from stop/parking lots/etc, so quiet
- electric motor assist is always on and supplements regular driving, especially on rapid acceleration

cons imo:
- loss of some trunk space and pass through due to battery, may not matter to some

benchmarked to a camry hybrid, it was quieter, better fit and finish, more refined, DROVE BETTER (camry was too whiny).

C&D didn't think much of it.

they got 23 MPG in their test. the last normal altima they tested? 24 MPG. so the hybrid version actually got worse mileage. it also shows no performance advantage due to lugging around nearly 400 more pounds of pork.

edit: i should add that i get about 28 real-world MPG in my 240 HP Accord V6.

Was it long term or short term test on the track?

Long term - 2 months and they tried to squeeze every last ounce of mpg out of it, light acceleration etc.

An technology obviously Nissan doesn't understand.
If you want to buy a hybrid, stick with toyota.

LOL, it uses Synergy Drive, licensed by Toyota. However, nobody else really integrates the technology as smoothly as Toyota; as a result, the total package doesn't perform as well.

As for the C&D tests, no hybrid is really made to be abused and it's no secret C&D abuses their cars (meaning they drive them like they're on a track even if they're not). Real world it'll probably get ~30 MPG which isn't fantastic. I like the Altima and have considered this car but will probably look elsewhere when I replace my Maxima.

Yes it's the same system as the one in the Camry

Its like kids who go the the same school, using the same textbook, learn from the same teacher, they can still have different grades.

Way to read the thread. They sent it to Patrick Bedard for two months for the sole purpose of getting every ounce of gas they could from it (his hobby now), meaning NO hard or even medium accelerating...they drove it like an old man (which he is now anyway).

i do a mix of highway and city. i commute to work, then drive around town during work. my daily commute is up and over a 2000-foot mountain pass.

has anyone heard anything new about BMW's hybrid system? i know they were working on one that reclaimed heat energy from the exhaust system, and therefore increased mileage even in steady-state driving.

Hybrids are not meant to be put on a race track unless it is like a Lexus Hybrid GS.

Put a Prius on a race track and you'll average 30-40MPG. Civic territory.

I did read the thread. I also read the article that mentioned the 23 mpg. It states, "The hybrid?s average, which included test-track thrashing, was a dismal 23 mpg."

That doesn't say much. If the 24 mpg they got w/the gas-only included the track, it only makes sense that they should

Of course, what would be ideal is a real real-world gas consumption comparison (but seriously this time)

However, given that in the following line of the same article already, the reporter says, "We occasionally got the mpg gauge to nudge over 30 mpg, but not by much," I wouldn't hold my breath if you're hoping to see miraculous numbers.
