What will be new in terms of major computer hardware for 2006-2007 (cpu, memory, motherboard, hard drives, etc.) on the DESKTOP front?

2005 has been a very significant year in terms of release of duality (particularly dual core, also SLI/crossfire). For the first time you don't need a workstation board to set up a dual cpu/core configuration. Plus in terms of raw computing power, it has been a huge leap.

Very early 2006, LCD Monitors did get a great boost with the 30" Dell LCD (and thankfully dropping the price of 20.1"/20.5" LCDs and 24" LCDs).

For someone like me who never plays games, I have not heard of anything really exciting that I can anticipate for 2006-2007. CPU has been the only component that has played an important role in my need to upgrade. Since the release of AMD X2, that has been more or less satisfied (I am yet to upgrade my A64 to X2 given a big hole in my purse, but I am waiting for prices to drop a bit more to get a nice deal). Since I never play games, upgrading from my AGP to PCIe does not appeal to me and I really don't see a big benefit to DDR2. The only thing I have heard about AMD's plan for 2007 is M2 socket and DDR2 (that doesn't sound like much of a boost for computer performance). Is that all AMD is going to be doing for 2006?

The only other technology I hear about is virtualization, which I don't feel is all that critical for home use. Unless you plan on running multiple free OSes, it can cause licensing issues as well.

Can anyone enlighten me on this issue?

2006 = mainstream ddr2, possibly hd-dvd and blu-ray., Nvidia g71 core, possibly g80.
2007 = ddr3 (supposedly), possble hd-dvd and blu-ray release
2009 = New HDD technology.

I'd say DDR2 was mainstream in 2005, considering it cost less than plain old DDR for much of the year and probably more than half of the new PCs built in 2005 used it...
