2005FPW gaming question

It seems lots of games that do support the 16x10 aspect offer a pretty limited number of resolutions. Specifically UT2004 only offers two, 1680x1050 and something below the equivalent of 800x600 (far too low). I'm currently using a 9500 Pro so 1680x1050 isn't very useable for most games. Is there any way to add more (specifically UT2k4)?

In my experience, UT2004 will show whatever resolutions you have listed in your display driver. So you could either add a custom resolution in your drivers and then choose it in UT2004, or you could just edit the UT2004.ini file with whatever resolution you want to use (and you'll probably want to increase the FOV from its default 85/90 since I don't think the game does it automatically for widescreen resolutions, I think you can go as high as 105 which works fine for me). 1280x800 is probably a good 16:10 resolution that's not too high or too low.

Ok, that makes sense...

I manually edited in 1280x960 to the UT2k4.ini file and it worked fine but was basically a stretched out image. I'm assuming the FOV (field of view?) setting is what will give the game the proper "widescreen" look and feel? If so what do I change the FOV to?, I'm new to this widecreen gaming stuff.

1280x960 is a 4:3 resolution, which is why it looks stretched out. Try something like the 1280x800 that I mentioned (which is the proper 16:10 aspect ratio).

Basically yes, the FOV setting controls how wide your field of view is (strange, huh?😛) - UT2004's default is I believe 85 or 90. You'll want to make it wider than that so you can see more left and right, otherwise it'll be showing no more than you would see on a regular 4:3 screen, just stretched out to map onto a widescreen resolution.

I think I used 1280x768, not 1280x960 but it still looked weird, It basically looks the same as when I play at 1024x768 and use the "Fill" setting on 2005FPW.

I'm going mess with this latter when I have more time but is there any way to calculate what I should be changing the FOV to aside from just guessing?

Well, I have noticed that the 2005FPW is a bit strange sometimes when using nonstandard resolutions - displaying them incorrectly in the OSD and such. I'm pretty sure I've seen a way to calculate the FOV before, but I can't remember what it was..

I installed the dell .inf file from the CD that came with my 2005fpw.

In HL2, there is a 1280x768 resolution that is 16:10, and it looks just fine, not stretched at all. There is an option in the OSD for scaling that says aspect ratio or whatever, I always have that one set.

That?s the res I use for HL2 also, but HL2 also has the ability to change to a 16x10 aspect ratio. UT2k4 doesn?t have that, so basically the game is just filling in the monitor with 4x3 video. The same thing as the "Fill" feature on the 2005FPW only here it happens in software, either way it doesn?t look right...

CHANGE THE FIELD OF VIEW SETTING!

Thanks for the worthless post. I understand that I have to change the FOV field as I previously stated. The question is what do I change it to?
