I recently purchased both a Dell 20" Widescreen LCD 2005FPW and a Samsung SIR-T451 HDTV Tuner for over the air broadcasts. Now I connected the LCD to the DVI port on the back of the tuner and I must say, the video looks AWESOME. There are four resolution settings on the tuner and they are: 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i. When selecting 720p, the 2005FPW uses a 1280x720 60Hz resolution and from my HDTV box, I can select if I want to stretch the image to fill the screen, zoom into the image to fill the screen or preserve the aspect ratio.
Now the interesting thing is: when I select the 1080i output, the 2005FPW blinks out momentarily, saying that it can't display that range, then suddenly restores the video! When I click the menu button on the display, it says the resolution on the 2005FPW is currently at 1920x1080 30Hz!! In case you don't know, the maximum resolution on the 2005FPW is 1680x1050. As further evidence that I'm actually using the higher resolution, when I open up a menu for the HDTV tuner, all the fonts and text boxes look much smaller
How is this possible? Is the monitor somehow accepting the 1080i signal and converting it to some lower , but usable resolution? If so, is it converting it to a resolution higher than 720p? Is it using the full 1680x1050? Is the 1080i signal superior than the 720p as a result of this interesting fact?
Lastly, I want to say that using the 2005FPW awesome my home theater. I can hook up a DVD player to S-Video (not the greatest, but hey it works) and a VCR to Composite video and a dummy computer to the VGA port. The Samsung HDTV box works wonders when DVI is used with it. There is rarely any distortion with the signal as I use a rooftop antenna.
Nevertheless, how can the 2005FPW be handling the 1920x1080 signal properly?
