2005 VW Touareg V6 TDI

I'm digging the recent trend of introducing diesel engines excellent torque, good mileage, plus no complex electronics in your car.

When the diesel fuel here gets sweeter (less sulfer), you get less tat tat tat and less black smoke.

If I'm doing my math right, it's rated at 22.2 mpg. That's not bad but I'd hoped the v6 diesel would get better gas mileage. As it stands, it's on par with gas-powered SUVs. It does have good low-end torque though (which is where you need it if you're towing something...who cares what your torque is at 6000rpm?). I'd like to see more SUVs switch to diesel. I suspect that'll happen once diesel fuel mix in the US improves.

No you won't. That sound is heard no matter what, as long as the rpm of the engine is at the stall. If you increase the fuel rate at ralanti, the vibration disappears, and the engine sounds more "round".
My brother has a Renault Clio with the 1.5l DCi engine (turbo diesel), and when idle it sounds like a truck (but not so loud).
The black smoke is because of incomplete burning of fuel, and appears when there is too much fuel injected (or not enough air) or when there is wear on the fuel injectors. (Usually on new cars when the engine's chip is modified).
For your information, the sulf oxydes are slightly bluish, and have a terrible smell

These new TDI type diesels are just as electronically sophisticated as regular petrol engines.
