I need some engine assistance concerning a 2005 Mazda Tribute with the 2.3 liter engine. Same engine used in the Mercury Mariner.

If the oil cap is left off, will much oil come out of the engine? Will the entire 4.5 quarts of oil be depleted in 100 miles to the point that the engine will lock up?

Is there a baffle under the oil cap that would prevent oil from coming out?

At what point will the oil pressure light come on from low oil level? Will the oil light come on at 2 quarts low?

What specific signs, such as knocking, clicking, etc. will the engine show as the oil starts to get low in the engine?

When you remove the oil cap with the engine running, will you feel vacuum there or pressure? Will it change at various RPM’s?

The crankcase should have light positive pressure. No oil should come out if you leave the cap off. I guess if you are driving it is possible for some too splash out. The oil pressure light comes on when the pressure drops below about 10 psi or so. At that point you've already damaged your engine imho.

If 4.5 quarts of oil came out of the oil cap in 100 miles, I would expect quite a mess under the hood and no need to wonder...
