VW pickup was FWD only, Pilot is 4WD Link, if they bring across the drivetrain, it'll be a significant improvement over the overloaded FWD pickup problem, more than one VW pickup owner had problems with traction when they overloaded the vehicle.

If they do the Avalanche style rear bulkhead, and 4WD, they'll sell the hell out of them. It'll alos have a lower cneter of gravity & be less prone to rollover hopefully...

I think they'll sell the hell outta them. Subaru doesn't have the market visibility to make an impact as this vehicle will.

I know I'm completely clueless, but I liked the VW pickup too, they put a diesel in it (a whopping 67 HP or so), and it got ~40 mpg.

I am guessing it'll need an alignment every time you take it offroad, tow, or put anything in the bed.

Honda rarely makes mistakes with their market. They have undoubtedly done research that suggests most people who buy trucks buy them for occasional utilitarian use, and more often stuff like hauling camping gear etc... So what if it's not an F150? Most people who own trucks do NOT haul boats or heavy stuff in the back. Same thing with SUV's, most people do not take them off-road almost ever. I bet Honda still sells the hell out of these trucks.

I will wait to see the specs when they are produced and make up my mind whether I want one. I am not impressed with Nissan or Dodge's quality (have owned a Ram), and so far Toyota is the only truck that I like that much.

Having a V6 as the only option is going to kill Honda's pickup attempt.

And, Honda has been doing some pretty insanely stupid design things for the past year. The new TL looks like crap, the Element looks bad, the Accord looks bad, etc.

If they even introduce this truck as a unibody with a V6, I bet it will fail and do so miserabely.

According to the Dodge salesman whom I purchased my truck from, the majority of his buyers prefered short bed V6 in their full size model. I have heard this from other dealers also. This Honda should be a little smaller than an American full size, so how is not having a V8 going to kill them? Most people don't take the V8 option!

Yes, the Rabbit based PU was FWD. but when I think VW PU, I still think about the old RWD, air cooled models.

This "truck" will make as much splash in the pickup market as the RL did in luxury car market. One-size fits all platform and engine is not going to cut it.

Ranchero was based on the Ford Fairlane, Falcon, Torino, Thunderbird/LTD from 57'-79'

Chevy El Camino was based on the Impala, Chevelle, Malibu, and Monte Carlo IIRC.

I thought that was Mustang based.. Didn't the Mustang have a frame?
I'd have to check about the Ranchero being unibody, but I doubt it was based on the Mustang.
The Ranchero came out 7-8 years before the Mustang.

The 1960-65(?) Ranchero was based on the Ford Falcon (basically the same platform the Mustang would use) and was a unibody design. Later Rancheros were based on the Fairlane/Torino, and were body-on-frame. But the body and bed were as a unit.

That salesman was full of sh!t ;) The only people that buy V6 full size trucks are cheapass contractors :)

Most full size pickups are sold either with V8's or diesels (HD models). Want proof? The all new '04 F-150 doesn't even come with the option of a V6. It only comes with two V8 models. You'll have to wait til '05 to get a V6.

If Toyota came out with some sh!t like that, I'd kill 'em! :)

But hey, Toyota doesn't need to do anything like that b/c they HAVE real pickups (compact and "near" full-size) and they HAVE V8 engines ;)

I'd bet money that somewhere on a drafting table, in Toyota's design center in California, they already have plans drawn up...

& it's on the Camry platform:D

LOL, don't you think that there are enough "Camrys" running around?? ;)

Camry
Camry Solara
Avalon
Sienna
Highlander
ES300
RX330

Besides, Toyota has better things they are working on. They've got new 3.5 liter V6 engines coming out for the next-gen Lexus IS and GS class. They are redoing the LS series. They are preparing a new Supra based on the next generation IS chassis. They are bringing out a new BoF SUV based on the FJ Cruiser concept vehicle. They've also got hybrid versions of the Highlander, Sienna, RX330 and Camry coming along with the redesigned '04 Prius.

Toyota has more important things to do than some pansy ass car pickup.

Thats quite a judgement to make about a pickup you've neither driven or had the chance to ride in.
Sounds like somebodys getting a little threatened by hondas venture into the truck department.

What truck? I see no truck from Honda. I see a unibody vehicle based on a FWD Accord;)

You can pull that junk with an SUV, but pickups are vehicles that are MEANT to be abused and used for towing, throwing heavy stuff in the back, etc. Honda engines have almost NO bottom end torque and that's what "truckdom" is all about.

And is the Subaru Baja a truck? Nah, it's just a hybrid monstrosity :p

I still say Honda will sell a ton. But we will have to wait for the sales numbers to find out.

I hope the H logo on the front grille won't be monstrous like it is on the Pilot. It looks real tacky that way.

Entirely possible and also quite likely.

The Ranchero, however, came out in 1957, quite a while before the Falcon was introduced.
I think the original Ranchero was based on the Ford Fairlane, or at least that is what the whole front end looks like.
I really don't know, but I would think that a 1957 design would still have been body on frame.

If you (or anyone ) has some more information on this, I really wish that you would post it.
I still like the old Fords from that era, and I still smile when I see one of the old '57 Fairlane Skyliner hardtop convertibles.
