This is the 4-cylinder version. Does it have a timing belt or timing chain? Anyone know?

Timing belt.

Sorry, Kroze; your answer doesn't square with other sources on the Web. They say the 2005 4-cyl. CVT Honda Civic Hybrid has a timing chain -- NOT a timing belt. Anyone else want to weigh in?

Dude - if you know how to google the answer, what's the point of asking here?

Chill out guys; I did some other research between the time I asked the original question and posted the later reply to Kroze. No harm, no foul.

Thanks NutBucket (great name, by the way). Now we're getting somewhere. So it's BOTH a belt AND a chain. Does that mean it should be changed before it breaks, like they used to do at about 100,000 miles, or should it last for the life of the car? 'Cause the dealership wants to change it AND the water pump in case IT goes out; and the whole job is supposed to cost $500 and change.

I'm just glad you have the 4 cylinder version and not the other one.

Oh man a V6 version would be nice. I'd drop that engine in my car in a nanosecond.

Also don't mock the OP, He has fine taste in automobiles, except for the hybrid part.

I'm far from a mechanical expert but I'd say if there's nothing wrong with the water pump, then it doesn't need replacing. I don't like it when mechanics give me "ifs". Though $500 isn't too much for that kind of job with parts included. Research your part options on the pump, if it is indeed going.

DUDE! I FOUND this site by Googling the question I had about timing belts or chains. Who DOESN'T Google. It's a great search engine. Any other questions??

It's NOT going. Like the timing belt (if this model even has a timing belt) they want to replace the water pump BEFORE it goes out and causes some "serious" damage. I'm just not buying it, and I asked people on this site for their advise and from some I got grief. Look at LTC8K6's accusation of a mental disability -- what gives? Is this how you attract new members -- with verbal abuse?

That's called a signature. It's at the bottom of every post I make...

New to the internet?

IIRC, it's fairly normal to replace the water pump in your situation, because of having to go to the trouble of taking it all apart anyway to replace the timing belt.

Oh, by the way genius (this means you, LTC8K6) you misspelled "disability." But you probably knew that.

I think there was a V-6 version of the Civic Hybrid in 2005. I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong. Anyway, thanks for the civil post, mmntech.

That's a quote.

That means someone else wrote it.

It was probably a poster named nick1985.

It may be part of your signature, LTC8K6, but I think you need to lose it; it's offensive. Just saying.

I'm just saying that if it's included in every comment you post, it's going to be credited to you; and I'm not new to the Internet. But I always try to stay friendly. Some people may judge that as a sign of weakness and attack. I prefer to see it as a sign of strength and character.
