I finally found the car I was looking for. A focus 3 door hatch with 5 speed manual. Perfect econobox. I have been going back and forth with the seller for a couple days and he just now decided to mention that it has a prior salvage title. The car hit a deer and the front left headlight and front left fender were replaced. Obviously I will want to offer less, but how much?

It appears to be in good condition and he has no problems with me getting an independent inspection.

The car has 46k miles and is the base "S" model. The only options it has are AC, CD, and ABS.

Edmunds TMV <-- Used this to come up with my original offer of $5000. Original asking price is $5350.

not even worth 5K with a salvage title

maybe half that

Sorry i wasn't clear, 5k was my offer when i thought it had a normal title (was unaware of the deer)

it sounds like it would be smarter to keep looking until i find a normal title car that will actually have resale value

We're talking about a $5k vehicle here. What resale value?

That's true. OP, are you going to drive this until the wheels come off? If so, if you can argue them down some, this should be a great vehicle for you. The '05+ Foci all came with the excellent Duratec motors (no timing belt to fuss over, good balance of fuel economy/power), they handle well, and that 'S' hatch is very very light. Fun and reasonably practical.
