Linky.
Since its introduction in 1998, the R1 has developed a devoted, almost maniacal following. The performance standards set by that bike have only now been challenged by Honda and Kawasaki, although Suzuki took on the R1 with its GSX-R1000, and even surpassed the R1 in terms of outright horsepower and performance a few years ago. While you have already read reviews of the new offerings from Kawasaki and Honda, the R1 represents Yamaha's attempt to take back the top rung of the ladder in the supersport category from Suzuki, as well.

So on this bike you can go zero to being scraped off the pavement faster than the other bikes out there?

Nah. The "Kills Squids Dead" factor is about the same on all of them. :p

To achieve a rather amazing redline of 13,750 rpm (a full 2,000 rpm higher than last year's motor):Q:Q:Q

US MSRP of $10,599:Q:Q

Honestly, all the liter-bikes are evolving to look and behave almost exactly the same these days. At least Ducati is still making semi-distinctive bikes.

I've allways had a soft spot (in my heart) for the Tuning Fork Factory. Wicked looking R1 :)

Not that I will buy one but KTM is headed for the street with a 1.0L Duke !
They are also going to race WSB :p

Yeah that new Duke engine is pretty badass from what I've read.

The problem I have with high end sport bikes is most are ridden by ppl that have no learning curve or track training :(
When I look at the rear tire of a sport bike, I shudder when the wear pattern is freeway mile flat across the face,
then when it is thrown into a corner it rides up on a peak. Its an unsettled feeling at best.

The head engine designer for KTM did the 1.0L motor for Aprilia. The 8? functions the balance shaft serves in the KTM
motor is just so trick. I really hope they do well :)

Yup. If you still have 3" of that mold release stuff on either edge of your tires, you need to swap your bike for a scooter. :p

We'll see. The learning curve is very steep with a new bike, just ask Benelli. ;)

"The ergonomics of the 2004 R1 have actually been relaxed, somewhat, with bars placed slightly higher, and foot pegs slightly lower and forward compared with last year's R1"
The one thing that has always bothered me about the R1 series was how low the bars were. Every time I straddled one it felt like I was dry humping the gas tank. That is why I stuck mainly to the Kawasaki 11-series bikes.

"Yamaha also dramatically increased engine compression to 12.4:1 (up from 11.8:1 last year)...That tall first gear is the price you pay, apparently, for the extremely close ratio transmission (sixth gear is exactly twice as tall as first gear)"
Uh-Oh, looks like the GSX-R1000 has some tough competition for 2004 :)

"The engine is entirely new, as stated, and its cylinders are also slanted forward an additional 10 degrees (40 degrees from upright, as opposed to 30 degrees last year). The crank spins 20 mm lower in the frame. Moving engine parts are lighter, just about everywhere. The crank is 16% lighter than last year. The clutch is 5% lighter, and even those larger-bore pistons are lighter." "Even with those significantly larger bores, this year's engine is only 2.5 mm wider overall, due largely to a new, closed-deck cylinder design that allows spacing between the four cylinder bores to be dramatically reduced. That narrow engine, more steeply angled forward, allows a straight double-beamed frame to pass over the top of the engine, leaving the 2004 R1 substantially narrower than last year's bike (3 inches narrower, to be exact)."

Now that is DAMN impressive!
Looks like I might be looking at a new bike...US MSRP of $10,599, uhhh nevermind :(

But the Benelli was so ,dare I say, sweet in its green, black & silver livery :p

It breaks old biker hearts when marques are pulled out of history and beat up. Such as MV, Mondial, Indian,
Norton(at one time) and there are others. Triumph did a good turn around, they have a 2300cc triple cruiser
out now, 143# of torque just off idle. :)

I'm jacking your thread so I will SU.

Believe me, when I'm ready to buy another bike, the Benelli is near the top of the candidate list. My last bike was a Triumph Daytona so I'm kinda partial to triples. :D

You guys talking about this Benelli? What I find strange is by bike standards the model is pretty old - almost 5 years. Have they updated the engine/suspension/etc recently?

Damn that bike is gorgeous.:Q

Yep, that's the one. I actually don't know what they've been up to with it lately (although a "naked" version has been rumored).
