I don't understand this. Looking at MSNBC and L.A. Times, how come they look at the total medals won instead of how many gold medals there are?
Isn't gold medal much more valuable than silver and bronze? Whoever has the most gold medals should be placed first, isn't it? It doesn't matter how many silver and bronze medal a country won, that country should still placed below a country with only one gold medal.

Well I slightly disagree with you. I think it should be a points system where gold is worth 3 pts., silver is worth 2, and bronze is worth 1. And obviously, whoever have more points is placed first.

that's the way that would make sense. it seems that they have been doing this for a long time though, the 'total medal' method.

btw, we're still not getting an olympic sticky? not too many people are interested, it looks like.

that makes sense imo. sounds good to me with the point system.

olympics arent entirely about destroying each other. sure its competition between countries, but its also a time for the world to come together.

Maybe the medals value should be different, like 4/2/1 for Gold/Silver/Bronze. Just the way it is in other sports (like F1, first: 10p, 2nd:6p and so on)

Total medal method is retarded, if you sent alot of atheletes, u are bound to get some medals.
I bet if USA was winning in gold medal count but losting in total medal count, the media would switch it to gold medal count format instantly.

this seems to reflect much of the world. as the olympics have an alarming amount of empty seats this year. :(

The greeks seem to only be showing up at the events that they are competing in, at least from what I have watched. Only so many people have the opportunity to travel out of country to watch the olympics, the rest of the tickets are left to the locals to buy.

They have always (as far back as I can remember watching the games) done an overall total, the country with highest count on top, then divided into columns by type. Until today China was first overall, so you are wrong.

Canada 1 Gold 0 Silver 0 Bronze
USA 0 Gold 46 Silver 50 Bronze

Which country would you say performed better out of those two? USA of course

Personally the points idea is best, 5 for a gold, 3 for a silver, 1 for a bronze imho.

I tried watching tonight, but NBC being NBC they had to spend as much time on tear jerking "what a miracle this athlete ever got a chance to compete" "what a miracle this one got to compete too" "what, no miracle, this one got cancer and died so isn't here, but it would have been a miracle if they were" minibiographies. Can't stand those, show the games and knock that stuff off.

The addition of sooo many events in the Olympics creates empty seats. Seriously, how many people want to watch four events in Canoe/Kayak Slalom Racing? I, for one, like the oldie but goodie Olympics events of swimming, gymnastics, track and field. I also like basketball, but for other reasons entirely.

and ofcorse, you only rate it so that your team looks the best, so right now the US has the most medals overall but China has most gold

But you see those boring events are where the Olympics came from. You take them out of the Olympics, it's like you're denying where you came from.
The Olympics was the Olympics, but not pure anymore. It's all stained by politics, and in turn, by capitalism.
If there were no money or control made from one thing, we're not interested in it anymore. So sad.

What a silly leap of bullsh!t. One goes by golds won, the other by total medals won.

Oh, and learn how to spell arrogant.

Well, thanks a bunch for correcting me the spelling mistake, spell wiz!

Did you happen to watch the intro last night about the olympics you consider clean? They told that during the Roman games that prostitution was running rampid and various other things. Their point was that no matter how different things are, they are just the same as they always were.

Because the "world" is always right and the US is always wrong, correct? Stop saying silly crap like that, you sound like a one-worlder.

Oh, and I see Canada is still tied for last place. :D
