Well obviously this is not official, but it would be nice if this were to turn out true.. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
In a keynote speech at Kettering University, (formerly the General Motors Institute) in Flint Michigan about a week ago GM Vice-Chairman Robert Lutz announced that the 2004 GTO will have a 360+LS1 in 2004 and a 405 HP plus LS6, among other product notes. The GTO is known to be one of Lutz's pet projects and pretty much anything out his mouth regarding the car is considered gospel. With the cars debut quickly coming up expect more and more info to slowly come out of GM. Also on a side note Lutz called the 2004 Grand Prix the best handling FWD car he has ever driven.

An LS6 powered GTO with 405 HP = cya in the rear-view!

LS1 is from the camaro
LS6 is the same engine used in the Z06

If it's true, I think they just canabalized 1) 1st year GTO sales, and 2) all vette sales(outside of convertable and Z06) overall.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's damn cool, but I question the reasoning.

[edit]Misunderstood the clip. Is the LS6 an option then, with the LS1 being the base engine?

I see where you're coming from... however, I'd look for the Vette to get a boost up into the 450 range in order to hold back the Viper's new 500/500/500.

For a daily driver, the Vette beats the Viper hands down, especially if you don't own a pair of asbestos shoes ;)

You've got that right! I think the boost in power will come with the C6.

Hehe... I've thought that the GTO would be a fun car to drive for a while. Any clue on the price it's going to come out at?

I would hope the base price would be like $30k with a fully loaded one probbaly going for $35k? They haven't announced anything regarding pricing yet, but thats what most people think. I just hope these things don't get marked up $10k (only 18,000 being made annually).

18,000 is a pretty decent production amount for a high horsepower, performance orientened vehicle going for over $30,000.

That's what, 3 times the amount of SVT Cobras or Lightnings being made? 5,000 will be snatched up by the fanboi's at well over sticker at pre-order and a couple months after they hit the showrooms, the remaining 13,000 will go for sticker, or a we bit below within 6 months of being out.

Just my $.02 on it anyway.

I'd buy the ORIGINAL with Manual, you'd think GM would make the new GTO manual, hell no freakin auto tranny. For such a big company like GM they really know how to screw people. Maybe thats how they got so big.

The 2004 Pontiac GTO will share much of the sculpted and clean styling of the current 2002 Holden Monaro CV8 coupe, with unique Pontiac brand character including a dual-port grille and powered by a specially tuned version of the 5.7-liter LS1 V8 (shared with some models of the Chevrolet Corvette) mated to a choice of either a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The rear-wheel drive coupe will feature 17-inch alloy wheels, 2+2 bucket seating and a premium sound system with an integrated six-disc CD changer. Additional performance and feature details are still being finalized and will be released closer to the public unveiling of the GTO at the Los Angeles and North American International Auto Shows.

pssssst....6 speed manual available....

You sir, are ridiculous. Sure... you better believe the only way they got so big is because they trick us helpless little consumers into buying crap

Sounds like they're going to have a manual, huh?

I was going to bash you, but it appears that others have taken care of that already.

if you really think the 405hp version of the GTO will sell for lower 30K's then you must be out of your mind...i would think more in the upward 30k's to lower 40k's.

and no it still would not make sense for GM to do that. They will cut into the vette's market share greatly...

and for everyone who thinks FORD will be owned...tell me why when teh camaro and all the other ls1's were out sold by the mustang by a margin of *3 - 1 (or something ridiclous like that)? Why do you think the ls1 has put to retirement? Don't get me wrong, the ls1, lt1, and ls6 are amazing motors...but motors aren't everythiing.

I guess the public has no clue what they are doing ;)

*changed to 3-1 after nfs4 corrected me on it

Hello? Anyone there? The BMW 540i STARTS at $51k, the GTO starts at $30k. While you're at it, compare a Celica GT-S with a Corvette, and a Wrangler with a Hummer. And as pointed out, there will be a manual.

1) The ratio was the Mustang outselling the Camaro and Firebird combined 3:1
2) The '93 + Camaros always whooped the Mustang in performance (save for the Mustang R).
