I think American carmakers may finally be "getting-it," with regard to asthetics, at least. I still wouldn't buy a GM motor though unless they were giving them away for free.

3800 V6? The new 4.2L in the Envoys/TrailBlazers? The LS1 or the LS6? All great/reliable engines by any normal person's standard. Apparantly your tunnel vision fails to see that.

I agree, but for its class, it is leading. SL500 15.1 quarter - $85k.

Who the hell buys a SL500 for track use???

Also if you do want track speeds...a 2003 S600 ran 12.xs quarter STOCK.

It isn't about track use. It is about performance. 0-60, 1/4 mile, 1/8 mile, whatever. If performance wasn't a benefit than every car would have 1.0 litre engines that get 80mpg. I was just responding to the post that said it was slow for the money, and showing that for what it competes with, it is acceptable.

If they're new, then how can you say anything about the reliability? hmm...I guess you can't. And their track record is piss poor. They'll need >10 years of "reliability" for anyone to start taking GM seriously again. As far as reliability goes, no one has a worse reputation than GM. PS - Don't worry about being owned, it happens when you say stupid $hit.

Not all 3800's are "reliable." One of the well known problems with the 3800 is the plastic intake manifold melting as a result of the "EGR port" spewing out hot liquid, which in turn melts the manifold. The pressurized coolant runs down through the manifold, past an open intake valve and ends up hydrolocking one of the cylinders.

I understand what he meant. But my point is that a 1/4mi is not the only measurement of speed available. The SL500, as well as other German marques with V8s, are known for their awesome mid-range acceleration (from 60mph to 120mph), which a 1/4mi test can't show.

Of course I have a clown icon to remind you of the kinds of silly things that are important to you compared to me. All this talk of looks and interior and seconds and engine hp and on and on. None of that has the slightest worth in judging a car. I, because I suppose, and for reasons I can't tell, learned to think some how, and was able almost instantly to determine that the only long term sensory contact of any importance I would ever have with a car was through my ass. Ergo, the ony test any car needs to pass is the ass test. Is it comfortable when you sit in it. Does you butt feel like it went to heaven. If so you have a million dollar car regardless of what kind it is. At the moment the greatest car in the world is the Cadillac Deville. It doesn't even have to be new. If you are on a budget, the fact that the Caddy isn't thought of as top tier is a blessing in disguise. Course you gotta be able to aford gas but mine will do 31 mpg or even 34 at about 55 mph on the freeway. And who cares if that's slow. Who wants to get anywhere when you're ass is in heaven. Some day you may learn to be able to think.

That was the problem I had on my '97 Olds Regency (Eighty Eight) but it never hydralocked the engine (lucky me). It was a PITA to find.
The car had run 116k miles then IIRC so I wont have the same problem again in 100k miles.

BAHAHA!!!!!
1) 3800 - been around in the original form since the early-mid 80s. Been on the 10 best list several times.
2) LS1/LS6 - Been around a long time as well. This is the engine that was in the FBods, and that is in the Vettes as well.
3) 4.2L - Made the 10 best list this year as well.

Owned? I think so.

I'm not sure how wide-spread that problem is, because I haven't even run across it in the ClubGP boards at all (then again I'm not really looking for it specifically). Every engine has a certian issue with it, especially in a first year model (like a '97 prix for instance). Any engine that makes the 10 best list in its time is reliable in my books. I do not generalize compainies in certain ways like many people on this board do with GM/Ford/Anyone else (even imports). Go by the facts guys, all companies can have reliable engines, and the 3800 is a fine example of a reliable one, and is considered by many to be bulletproof. Just go over to Club GP and look how much HP some people have going through this engine with stock internals.
