5 series is a sedan. 3 series is a coupe.

Correction! The 5-series are all sedans, whereas the 3 series, come in coupe sedan, and cabrio flavors! The main difference is that the 3-series are compact, and 5-series are mid-sized (albeit more luxurious and more "pigish" in the handling category).
