I bought this jeep 2 months ago, when I went over a speed bump I heard a bang, like it bottom out or someone hit the frame with a hammer, it happanes on both sides. I thought it was a blown shock. I changed the 2 front shocks, it still does it. Someone mentioned stopbumps? Someone said something about a rubber piece thats attacked to the frame that may be missing? The jeep only has 80k miles on it. This is driving me crazy, of all the vehicles to have this issue you would think a jeep would be the last, I never owned a vehicle that did this before. Im somewhat of a backyard mechanic but 100% in the dark when it comes to jeeps and the front end suspension.

Any help will be greatly appreciated and photos would also be good to see where these rubber stopbump things are located.

You need to get the car on a lift so the wheels are hanging free and you need to check the entire suspension for play. My hunch is tie rods.

They're called bump stops. Not stop bumps. They're just rubber blocks bolted somewhere on the frame that cushion the sudden shock of the suspension bottoming out. So unless you're routinely bottoming out your suspension, it's probably not them.

I'd look at sway bar end links (they connect the sway bar to the control arm), ball joints, control arm bushings.. Everything that moves should probably be checked over.

You could probably take it in for one of those "free alignment checks" and they'll definitely tell you everything that's worn out.

One bang or a rattle? If there is just one, it's a load shift due a worn bushing or a loose bolt, most likely. The force of whatever is moving is forcing it to move once and then stay there. Look at your sway bar end links, sway bar body mounts, lower control arm bushings, track bar. Put the whole front end on jacks and start shaking the parts from underneath. Suspension bits should not move easily, if at all.

A rattle would more likely be something that does not have a load applied to it so it can freely move and hit multiple things. A skid plate, heat shield, the hub cap of the wheel, etc.

I had something analogous with my Honda Element.

It was a worn bushing...

Best of luck,

Problem solved, both my upper jounce bumpers were basically gone. Picked up a pair off of ebay for 32 bucks, dealer wants like 50 bucks a piece. They just push right in, no tools. The front ones are yellow..
