1. GTI looks better than a Mini to me, and it isn't a niche car. The Mini's attraction will fade, just like the New Beatle and the PT Cruiser.
2. The 24 valve VR6 is a smooth engine with power from idle all the way to 7200 rpm. The stock rev limiter is 6800 rpm (I think), but people with chips that remove the rev limiter have shown on a dyno that the engine makes power up to 7200. That's almost Honda-esque reving, with the added benefit of having power way down low.
3. Ever heard a VR6? If you haven't, you don't know what you're missing. One of the best sounding engines evar!
But it's really all personal preference. The Mini's styling is too outlandish for me, and probably most people. The GTI's weight comes from chassis stiffening and sound deadening materials. Which I would gladly live with. All it needs is a better suspension from the factory and it'd be the perfect car.
*edit* Dyno plot with a chip vs stock VR6. There's something to be said about a torquey motor that revs that high.
