I found a police fleet car dealership that snagged two Mercury Marauders. One @ 83,000 and another at 89,000 for $8,900. I think these cars looks bad ass and was thinking about getting one. They are not police cars, they were some kind of county board trustee car. Assuming the car looks and sounds sound, would you think it's a bad idea to get one? I want a "fun" sedan for spring/summer/fall.

Edit:I'm also concerned about maintenance. I'm assuming a lot of parts come out of the stock Crown Vic/Grand Marquis. Anyone know?

I have a Grand Marquis and I love it but you need to necessarily like big boats. Great for the highway, around town you'll feel it's size a lot more. I'd have 2 if my wife were keen on the idea.

I do, in fact, I have been looking at the Chrysler 300C and Dodge Magnum for a while. I'm still fixated on a Magnum but the price is a little steep still.

If you want a big sedan with some balls, I would say go for it.

Parts should be easy enough to come by.

Wow, which county is wealthy enough to get their board members Marauders?

They look bad ass indeed. Where are you located?

I like them, but too big for me.. That's fullsize...

I don't think they are bad cars though, the panther platform is probably one of the best cars Ford has ever made..

If it is in good condition, then I'd say go for it. I had a Grand Marquis once and those things are rock solid. Parts are easy/cheap to come by and they are very easy to work on compared to FF layout vehicles, even "fullsize" ones.

The Marauder has a significantly different engine that the towncars / marquis etc. It has a 4V engine off the Romeo Low Volume Line, as opposed to the 2V's that came off the High Volume Line.

The engines are excellent: all the 4.6L 4V's aside from the Cobra of that era came off that line, and you can expect good quality. It's also a fairly mod-able engine: most of the same mods that fit on the Cobra's will fit on the Marauder.

It is a boat - there's no getting away from that. It's a quick boat though, and an exceptionally comfortable quick one at that.

I have a 2003 Grand Marquis LS I bought in January with about 89,000 miles on it. I'm happy with it, although as others have mentioned the gas mileage sucks major donkey balls. I get about 13 mpg around town, but I only drive about 5,000 miles per year.

It has adequate power to get around, but it definitely isn't a hotrod. The fun part is pulling in behind people and watching the 'Oh shit!' looks on their faces. :)

Mine is '04 Grand Marquis GS and I get 20MPG around town and got it up to 29MPG on the interstate. I have the 2.73 rear axle though.

motor/tranny will go 200K+ without an issue. I have a Mark VIII that has pretty much the same engine/tranny combo and It has 254,000 miles on it and still uses less than 1qt of oil between 5000 mile oil changes. Great cars and believe people when they claim 27+mpg highway and also 20mpg town is achievable with a lighter foot.

I know this thread is old VinylxScratches, but I'm curious to know if you picked up the MM.

I love the Marauder. I pass one every morning while getting my coffee and I always stare at it. It's very subtly "pimp". Can't beat the black and chrome colour scheme.

i thought that i read somewhere that the maurader was one of the top 10 vehicles that were stolen. you may want to check with your insurance provider about the cost to insure.

Waste of $8k. My dad had a Crown Vic and it wasn't even slightly fun to drive. The only fun part was people thinking you're a cop.

If there's one thing that American car companies have pretty much always done right, it's body-on-frame sedans with a V8 and RWD. It ought to be pretty damn reliable.

It won't be "fast" in the sense of sheer acceleration, but the engine is nice and flexible; the car will probably never feel "strained" when pulling a load.

They're not "fun to drive" in the same sense that, say, a 944, MR2, or Miata is, but they're nearly unbeatable for long-distance freeway cruising. The cars just soak up miles.
