2003 Honda Accord Ex V6 for $10,888

That was the classified ad, so for obvious reasons I called. A guy on the phone says he's selling for a friend out of town and I could come by to test drive it. I drove over and he gave me the keys and took a picture of my license. Didn't even want to go with me.

Took it out and drove it around and it drove great, everything worked except the right mirror which was converted over to a manual mirror (they cut the plastic and had installed a little lever). Full leather with heated seats, 6 disc changer, dual temp air, V6 3.0, and all the other stuff associated with an EX.

No dents anywhere, but saw one weird thing, the tailpipes were painted the same color as the car. :Q

Something i had noticed was the key fob didn't work and had the battery removed and it had a ticket on it that said "Year - 03, Manufacter - Honda, Make - Accord", sort of like the ones that you get when you take it in the dealer.

So here goes our conversation:

Me : So what's up with the ticket?
Him : Don't know why it's on there.
Me: Ok, well I'd like to take it in to the Honda dealer to have it checked over.
Him : Well, there are two other people that are coming to look at this tonight and in the morning, so you probably want to hurry that up.
Me: Ok, well I'd still like to have it looked at just to be safe.
Him : Ok, well.... I think you should know that, if you are going to use financing of any sort, this is a reconstructed title vehicle. That is why it is so much below NADA.
Me: AHHHH HAH! Ok, thanks. (me walking off)

Damn, too good to be true! 🙂

Tailpipes painted means that the body shop that repaired the rear of the car was extrremely careless and did not mask off the car properly.

Either the bumper needed a respray or the rear of the car was in an accident and it was repaired.

Anybody who would will willfully hack the interior of the car by being cheap and not repalcing a power mirror correctly is probaly someone who did no perform routine maintenance.

I would walk away.

Considering it was a rebuilt title, I'd say your 100% correct. It was probably sprayed in someone garage. 🙂

I'll be honest though, I thought about calling the guy and offering like $5k for it. Hell, even a peice of crap honda is probably more reliable that most cars out there because it's a Honda. 🙂

It tracked perfectly straight and ran super smooth. Reved it upto 5k rpm to see if there was any resistance or hesistation, which there wasn't.

Who knows, maybe it'll make someone a happy owner. maybe not though. 🙂

Honda reliability is ridiculously overrated.

You want cheap, god power and good fuel economy.

Buy any of the GM W-body sedans/coupes of the late 90's to today. The 3.8L 3800 Series II and Series III motors & trans are bulletproof. Yes the interior design is lacking a bit and the cars are not refined but they are super cheap to maintain and last and last.

Regal
Grand Prix
Impala
Monte Carlo

I had a 03 Buick Regal LS with the 3.8l as my second car... 🙂

It was a great car, really wishing I hadn't sold it.

yep, I had a 97 Grand Prix GT with the 3.8L 3800 Series II engine and it was awesome. much better than the POS I replaced it with (a 2001 Ford Contour SE). Of course I love my Toyota Tacoma now...but sometimes I miss the power from that GP V6.

Overrated, maybe. Ridiculously? C'mon.

I don't see anything great about it, either. I've seen two year old civics go for almost as much as new. People have an insane view of quality on these vehicles.

Thanks for your completely irrelevant post!

OP: Any time it sounds too good to be true... I followed up on a similar lead once: A 2006 Accord EX-L V6 6-speed with only 300 miles for $16,000. Turned out it had been on a dealer lot that was flooded and was a salvage title. I made calls and found out the flood had been over a foot of water. Gave up on that right away. 🙂

And by the way, I've experienced two Grand Prixs with the 3.8L. The first stranded my friend and I on the side of the highway with less than 100K on the odometer. The second was brand-new but Mr. Smithers weak trying to haul around 4 adults and luggage. The transmission kept hunting trying to keep up with Salt Lake City traffic. The rear suspension was bottoming out every couple of minutes... on smooth roads. But it had one redeeming quality: The power outlets stay on even while the car is starting! An aging '94 Civic hauled the same load up 1000 miles back and forth over a 4000 foot mountain range in the summer with no issues. And no bottoming out. YMMV.

Even as a non-salvage title it wouldn't have been a great deal unless you could get it for $1000+ off asking price. I just sold my 03 Accord EX-V6 coupe w/ 67k miles for that price.
