I have an opportunity to buy a black 2003 S10 Extended cab 4cylinder w/ 59k for $5900. Edmunds says its a 2.2L, would this be an ecotec, or a 90's legacy motor?

120HP w/ Automatic and 4400lb gross weight...Hmmm, obviously not too fast
Probably good enough for a knock around truck/3rd vehicle

probably be similar to most Ranger 4-cylinders as far as speed goes, and there are plenty of those on the road so that isn't too much of a problem apparently.

I'd spend a bit more money and get a Ranger with the 4.0 v6 with that many miles on it though. The 4.0 is very durable and the truck has enough power for towing light loads (boats, campers).

SLOW. I have a 99 s10 4 cylinder with a manual and it is painfully slow. Merging on the freeway sucks. Gas mileage is not very good for a 4 cylinder, I get around 20mpg mixed driving. Other than that its a decent little truck, I like mine.

Its not an ecotec, the 2.2L was introduced back in 94 with the second generation s10.

I wish I would have spent a little more and got the 4.3L v6. I think similar rangers tend to be cheaper, but I liked the s10 better.

I had a 98 4 cyl S10, pretty much as you described.

Wikipedia is claiming the 2.2L is a Vortec engine. But I don't recall it ever being referred to as a Vortec and it sure as hell isn't an ecotec.

As others have said, it's not an Ecotec and it DOES suck. I drive a 99 4-speed auto for a while and it was a dog - bad gas mileage and slow as molasses. Unless you need a barebones DD hauler, I wouldn't bother honestly. Poor MPG, zero acceleration, and not much other value. Maybe try for a Colorado (new version of S10) that does use the Ecotec motors, or get an S10 with the 4.3L V6; that thing is a beast, basically a 350 small block with two cylinders lopped off.
