President Bush says in mid-2002, U.S. disrupted al Qaeda plot to use shoe bombs to hijack plane for attack on L.A.?s Liberty Tower.

Let me guess, it was because we were secretly spying on US Citizens.

"The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa."

A Link to the Past

<CLIP-1>
Under the plot, the hijackers were to use shoe bombs to blow open the cockpit door of a commercial jetliner,
take control of the plane and crash it into the Library Tower in Los Angeles, since renamed the US Bank Tower, Bush said.

And another

<CLIP-2>
The United States and its allies thwarted an al Qaeda plot after the September 11 attacks
to use bombs hidden in shoes to breach the cockpit door of an airplane and fly it into the tallest building in Los Angeles,
President George W. Bush said on Thursday.

?????

Detonation of a 'shoe bomb' would do more than break down the door - it would rupture the cabin resulting
in explosive decompression and kill all on board within minutes, plunging the plane into the ground.
They would have to be nearly on top of the target to even have a slim chance to hit their mark.
Quite a dubious scenario shown there.

Thread Title:

2002 Plot to Bomb Liberty Tower Disrupted.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So is it Library or Liberty?

All I know is the President can't pronounce the former, and is struggling to defend his own illegal attacks on the latter.

Someone help me understand something. We are in another country fighting in 2002 and trying to sell to the American people, reasons why we should be in a second. Why wouldn't this information have been released THEN when it could have helped in said selling? Where did they get the information about these alledged plots if none of the people involved in the planning weren't captured until 2003? Also, if these operatives were meeting with OBL, shouldn't we have gotten a pretty good idea of where he was and gone after him?

Could it be that there really wasn't a plan and that there needs to be something positive said about the administration or a distraction from current events?

Like Cheneys allegation that the illegal wiretapping prevented the destruction of the Brooklyn Bridge.
Which was some disturbed individuals plan to use a welding torch to bring down the bridge. (which turned out to be just the figment of a wackos ramblings)
A WELDING TORCH?
How ludicrous.

President Bush says...
You can stop right there. Those three words are currently definition #1 when you look up the meaning of "credibility gap." :p

The minute I saw this story on the news not only did I know a thread about it would be here in P&N but I also knew exactly the content of the cirlce jerk that would ensue.

bush can claim any victory he wants on terrorism without an shred of proof, and msm gobbles it right up, as do 51% of this country

I bet if you ask a SEAL team to rig a shoe bomb that was only strong enough to force open a reinforced, locked cockpit door without decompressing the airplane, they could do it. And if they could do it, I bet the smartest Al Qaeda bomb makers could think of a way too. Only problem for them is they don't have airplanes lying around to try it on, so they might take a few airplanes down before they get it right.

Shaped charges or properly placed det-cord could sever the door at the latch or hinges - if there were correct retainers and parts.

Don't you think that someone would notice in the 5 - 10 minute set-up and cure times involved in correctly setting the charges ?

Now wrapping det-cord around a tree to drop that down would only take a few seconds, but an aircraft door is not a tree.
A shoe-bomb is going to go all over, if it fires at all.
