I test drove one today...and the 5-speed was really stiff and jerky, imprecise. my 92 civic's gearbox is like butter compared to it. Anyone have this experience, or was this either a)something that would go away in time or b)maybe a fault of that individual car and I should drive another? They want 14.5K for a loaded EX coupe with 1.9% as well.

yeah, it was an ex coupe...really liked it except for the gearbox. The automatic was fine but slower, plus $700 more.

1.9% is a great rate how many months?

I wouldn't pay 14.5k for a manual I'd say $13,900 or $14.5 for an automatic.

I am surprised to hear this - I generally think of Hondas as having the nicest FWD manual transmissions out there. Even the one on my '84 Accord, which had 207K miles when I got rid of it, was a gem.

I always hear about "rifle bolt" precision and such.. now you Honda suckers have transmissions as rough as my Nissan!

Hee hee - I actually drive a Maxima SE with a 5-speed, and I have to admit I miss the tranny from my Integra GS-R - it was jewel-like in its smoothness and speed of shifting.

When I had my 240, I dreamt of putting a Honda 5-spd manual tranny in there...it's that good.

My friend's 87 1st gen CRX 5-spd manual tranny has better shifting/feel than the one in my 95 240SX. It's that good. Oh man I loved the throws on that. Ok so it made funny noises cause the bearings were bad, but it still had great feel.

Sticks aare great. You can drag race twelve feet every time the traffic starts to move.

Much prefer to drink coffee than shift. If you want to shift you can ease into neutral and roll to a stop.

ElFenix -> Its SO much more fun to go naturally aspirated, though. :) (I had a B18C5 with 12.3:1 compression, hemi-heads with much larger than stock valves, and Ti connecting rods that would turn around 9000 rpm... putting out about 230hp or so--201hp at the front wheels confirmed, at least). But I autocrossed, not drove on the street.

On topic.... yeah, the new civic transmission is a little rough. Its been complained about ever since 2001 when the new Civic debuted. Fortunately, the S2000, the RSX, and even the Accord use different transmissions--and haven't seemed to suffer from the malady.

The Honda is still a VERY good point A to point B car--good gas mileage, reasonable space, all the options you NEED on the EX, and good reliability. If you're looking for a little more driving fun, go to the Mazda dealer and check out a Protege. You can't quite afford an MP3 or a Protege5, but the ES sedan should be fine--and I've been REALLY impressed by my neighbors (he let me drive!).

I finally got rid of my 5-speed vehicle about a week back. I must be gay, too! However, after driving stick-shift vehicles on and off for nearly 24 years, I've got to say that I prefer the automatic. In my area, traffic is pretty bad and shifting tends to really build up your left calf from all of the clutch work. However, I could get a pretty good rhythem going and I could use the engine to brake the vehicle to keep pace with the traffice, but still manual trannys are still a pain.
