So a buddy of mine was troubleshooting a persistent check engine light........(I told him to do the Auto-Zone thing w/ the gizmo, find code, reset codes, etc.)

He did this & gas cap fixed it once, then some other fuel item fixed it the 2nd time, then it came on & stayed on.

Soooooo...........he takes it to the dealer to check it out & they tell him he needs a new transmission.

2002 Honda Accord 4-cyl sedan w/ auto trans. 100,000 miles.

Why the confusion? Honda transmissions do go bad too sometimes.

Was curious as to whether there's a "fix" to this or ?? (It definitely appears that something was up as Honda extended the warranty to 7yrs 100,000 miles on this generation of trans because of problems.

???

And if it's all in this guy's hands alone.......anybody recommend whether or not to do a good used (maybe one of those low-mileage Jap trannies?) replacement?? (Honda wants $2,600 to put in a refurb!!!)

Did he ever change the transmission fluid?

Did they give him any details on WHAT went bad in the transmission, or did they just tell him he needed a new one.

Yet another reason I'm glad I drive a manual. Breaking a manual is almost always an ID 10-T error.

Yes, I asked him those very same questions.

He said he did the 30K, 60K and 90K transmission flush AT the Honda dealer! (Another reason to only drain/fill & not let anyone EVAARR flush your trans???)

And, no details.........just......"Hey you're trans is toast, you need a new one!"

P.S. After having driven manual most of my life, I'll never buy a manual vehicle ever again. Manual trans = caveman. Auto trannies are too quick/smooth these days to warrant manuals ever again.

No, manual trans = driver.

Automatic transmissions are for people who wish that their car had an autopilot as well, so that they could read a book while their vehicle took them to their destination. If you actually like driving, you use manuals.

No, manual trans = "I watch too much Top Gear & have wet dreams about Bugattis I'll never drive & feel the need to go thru that mechanical antiquity called 'shifting a manual transmission' to make myself feel like I still have an ounce of testosterone running thru my veins" ;)

Go test drive an auto 535i & put it thru its paces, then post back here once you've been "born again"........

535i stick more fun?

I currently have 2 cars, neither of them "performance" is any sense of the word. I have a 1987 Volkswagen Cabriolet (2500lb convertable, fun little machine), auto, and a 1986 Ford Thunderbird (big boat, straight line much quicker than cabriolet), manual. Hands down the ford is much more fun to drive because it requires more of my attention.

Oh snap, now you've done it.

While I agree with your sentiment, it does tend to be a guy thing.. It is not about testosterone. It is about being completely in control of a complex machine. Simple as that.

Automatic transmissions do not even come close to behaving like a "spirited" driver drives a manual, especially on the downshifting part of things. Bleh! I hate my automatic.

Um.

Time for a second opinion from an independent Honda specialist, pronto.

For one thing, failing transmissions don't trigger the "check engine" light at all! i can verify this since the tranny in my Accord V6 failed and I never had a single warning light. the check engine light is almost always related to emissions equipment detecting something wrong with the emissions, or just failing itself.

Though I agree, there are modern, more-intelligent autos that do a surprising job of keeping up with spirited driving. Still not as fun to operate, though.

Just because you don't know what the stuff feels like doesn't mean you have to make fun of those of us who do. I'm glad you like your appliance better than you like exotic supercars, but some of us still have some appreciation for machinery that has a soul.

You can't heel-toe into the correct gear while trail-braking as you enter a corner in an automatic. Sure, if you have a silly amount of power, you can just point it in the general direction and push the go button once you exit the corner, but that's not driving. I'll admit that transmissions that feature a computer-controlled clutch and paddle shifters are in many ways better than a regular manual, if not as fun...but in my mind a torque converter is an inherently sloppy, heavy, and imprecise way to deliver power.

The first 20 minutes of my commute occur in an area with winding roads, no traffic, and no cops, so it's not like I'm totally making this up.

Was it shifitng bad before? Also what code came up when it was pulled?

Something seems to be missing here.

No.

Just saying, that car doesn't actually have a traditional manual transmission.

Like it or not DSG is the way of future transmissions. A regular manual will become a rare find in about 5 to 10 years.

I actually think each type of transmission serves its purpose. There is no need to declare your manliness based on your transmission. I guess some people really love trannies.

I thought check engine lights only came on for emissions or light electrical problems and not for something like a transmission failure? I'd go somewhere else, and get a 2nd opinion.

Can you go to AutoZone and see what their CEL checker says?

EDIT: My old Galant had the transmission completely fail, and no CEL ever came on...
