Looking at an 02 Escape, 60,000 miles, XLT w/ leather, V6. KBB is over $14,000 and Edmunds is closer to $12,800. Price is $12,995.

Thoughts? I'm gonna try to get it down to $12,000 but I don't know much about them.

my escape :)

They are sharp looking cars. Mine is the 2001, and I get compliments on it all the time. They are aggressive but tiny, but practical. I get 27mpg.

anyways that seems like a really really good price. Mine is the 4 cylinder, and had 54,000 miles Kelly blue book's MSRP was $12,570. I got a really great deal so I took it (didn't pay the 12,570 ;))

I think you would be very happy with the car you're looking at

btw it handles incredible in the snow... in fact a little too good :( every now and then I like to strafe around corners but it holds strong

Our Escape!

Close enough :D

I would negotiate aggressively because Ford sales numbers are sagging and there are incentives on new Fords.

I really like the little hood thing over your back window, makes it look a little more slick

The last time I've heard the Escape sells pretty well. Ford Explorer and Expedition have had some deep drop in sales.

Thanks. The 'hood' is the so-called spoiler :D Purely decorative, I'm sure. /end threadjack

Is that the USS Intrepid in the background? Or is it some other retired aircraft carrier?

Any decent SUV with AWD will get you through the white, fluffy stuff. I recently bought a Subaru Forester (more like a station wagon), this thing is actually fun to drive through 6-8" of snow, and see the other people get stuck in the parking lot.

Any other thoughts? Problem areas? I've seen a few people bitch about transmission shudder attirbuted to heat. I may throw a transmission cooler on it.

I've had one for over 3 years now. XLT 4x2. Got just over 60k miles on it now. It's real good in the snow and in general. Haven't had any major problems with it, just minor annoying things like the cd-player refusing to eject cd's and the rear-windshield wiper breaking. Get's pretty good gas mileage but the tank is a little small. I towed a uhaul trailer cross-country with it and it handled it no problem, no tranny cooler or anything. Gas mileage was terrible though, but that's to be expected with towing.

What kind of mileage do you see? It's not too far off from the MINI when you factor in that the MINI needs premium.

I've never really measured it. I drive like an idiot so probably not that great but I've heard most people get around 23-24 with the V6.

I know you were asking SpongeBob, but I'm sure he wouldn't mind me answering :) With our 2WD V6 Tribute, I average 22 mpg in mixed driving. This is consistent with the EPA estimates of 20 city, 25 hwy.

Here is our Escape. We're really happy with it. Got it about 6 months ago. 2001 XLT, leather mach audio, AWD, etc. We bought it for $12900, had 40k miles on it at the time.

I really like the burnt orange color on the new ones, as well as the hybrids.

I've got a 2002 Esacape AWD V6 XLT with 38,000 miles. I have had absolutely zero problems with it. I've used it for towing, city driving (my commute), highway trips, and driving in mud and snow.

KBB != market value
I can buy domestic cars 1-2K off KBB all day long. Around here there's at least 5 of those (4wd, xlt, !60K) listed around 12 or slightly under. You can't get a good deal from a dealer, they're always makeing money on you.

Nice little car though, I've had it as a rental for a week couple months back. Pretty decent interior considering the sticker price of the car. The seats were really comfy too :) You definitely want the V6 tough (thats what i had) - with the dohc duratec the car was ballanced just right. The 4 cylinder would definitely make it sluggish.

An this is $1,200 under KBB, but that doesn't mean it can't go further. :p

I hate dealing with private sellers. I don't want to wait for their lein to be removed, or go down to the DMV to wait for tags and pay the tax. This way it's all nice and simple.

The Ford dealership we went to had the same Escape, down to the color, with 10,000 more miles for $14,000.

Well as I said, the fact that one dealer has it relatively cheaper than another dealer doesn't make it a good deal. The difference between the market value of the car and the 12K you're willing to give them is money you could be saving ...
