A friend of mine was driving along yesterday, when the car wouldn't accelerate from a stop - seemed like the trans was slipping from what she described (i wasn't there). She restarted the car, and it worked OK for a couple miles, and then the CEL came on. The dealership is telling her that the "Pressure control module" needs to be replaced, and is quoting her $1500. Does this sound legit? is this the famous accord/odyssey glass transmission issue i've heard about?

from a quick search, depending on what part/parts of the pressure control solenoid assembly are required, the parts are around $250.

the car has about 100k miles. I'll try to find out more information tonight.

thanks

that accord/TL/CL/ oddy was mainly on the v6 models.

There was no proper fix, honda just band-aid repair it. They bumped up the trans warranty to 100k, they would just swap in another trans that was due at 100k again. They made minor repairs but nothing fixed it.

But this does sound like it. Is that module internal or external?

I've literally repaired hundreds of those transmissions and from my experience changing out solenoids and control modules does not address the problem. The transmission has an internal problem and debris from the clutches in either the drums or torque converter are clogging the filter. The transmission needs to be removed disassembled and rebuilt with a new converter. If the transmission is equiped with a warmer that will need to be replaced as well.

I don't recommend buying a used transmission because with those you usually end getting the same problem. It may not be immediate but it is more than likely to going happen again very soon. Unless you can find one with very low miles but with a ten year old car the odds of that are slim.
