However the AGP cards are more expensive than their PCI-XPress Bretheren.

Um. No they're not.

Depends on the card. There is definitely a premium on the 6600GT AGP (due mainly to the extra bridge chip required, as I understand it). The ATi X700 Pro is also very aggressively priced compared to AGP cards with similar performance.

For example, the native PCIe Leadtek PX6600GT TDH is $197 at newegg, whereas the bridged AGP version of the same card is $219.

The 6800 series on the other hand is more expensive in PCIe form, last I checked.

I've seen people reporting $170 prices on the card lately, so keep your chin up. You might be able to find one used, especially with so many confused people out there lately (like me! 🙂 ). Looks like at least one 256MB 6600GT will soon debut at around $200, which should drive prices down even more.

Cool. I wasn't aware of that. Haven't kept up with any news.. I guess I could wait a bit to see what comes up. Anybody have the XFX 6600GT? I'm curious about the noise..

Somehow nobody has stuck to my restriction of under $150. hehe..

i run my 2001fp with a radeon 9200....around $50 approx.

it does dvi (i can run a second monitor analog), i surf, watch tv, and watch dvd's without any problem at 1600x1200.

added benefit is that it is fanless (no extra noise).

cheap, works, quiet

no need to pay for more than you need....

i don't really do any gaming.

Thanks for knocking me out of the clouds. The 9200SEs are in the sub $50 range.

It is VERY tempting to get a 6600GT, but I also remember what happened a few months after I got my ATI Radeon AIW, my current card. It must have costed over $200, but then in few months the prices for it just dropped a lot... I can wait.
