2001FP and what video card?

I'm looking for a decent video card to do DVI at 1600x1200 when I get my DELL 2001FP.

My old ATI RADEON AIW can only do up to 1280x1024 on DVI. I'll probably split up the video card and tv tuner this time.

I remember when I researched vid cards a long time ago, they were talking about good 2d and 3d. I need something that's good for 2D at that high of a resolution and decent 3d, which I don't do much of. Something under or around $150 would be good (prefer under).

My ATi 9800 Pro works well with my 2001fp at 1600x1200 using DVI. They're still going for about $200 new, but you can find them on the FS/FT forum for less than $150.

What's wrong w/ the 9700Pro?

Nothing wrong at all, it's an awesome card but if you're getting a new card I'd go with the current generation instead. But if you're looking for a card for around or less than $200 it's awesome.
Plays BF-1942, MOHAA at 16 x 12 just fine.

How much is the 9700Pro anyways? I'm kinda poor after the 2001FP. 🙂 I don't really play games, only CS. And maybe the next version of it.

I have an eVga6800GT w/ my 2001FP running 1600 x 1200 32bit. Execellent image quality..

Regards,
Jose

My 6600GT works great in DVI mode with my 2001FP. I do some gaming and lots of 2D work on it. You can play Doom 3 just fine with high settings at that resolution, albeit with AA/AF turned low or off.

I believe in your price range, you may not be able to get everything you want.

If you went up 30-50 dollars you could get a perfect card for that monitor. My suggestions are:

Nvidia 6600GT
ATI X700
ATI 9800 Pro 256 Meg or 9800XT

Then you could get great graphics for a gret monitor. With the 6600 or X700 you are closer to the cutting edge, but still far enough away to not get bitten by the price tag. However the AGP cards are more expensive than their PCI-XPress Bretheren. And there are only PCI-Express X700's so that may not be an option.

Please, do explain how a 256Mb card is going to be better than a 128Mb or even 64Mb for what he's doing.

Um. No they're not.

I love image quality 😀 At 16 x 12 I see no need for a maxed out AA and AF setting. I can't see the difference.

I'd go for an nVidia 6600 GT 128Mb based video card -- pretty good bang for your buck at the moment.. Personally, I use my Dell 2001FP @ 1600x1200 /w an nVidia GeForce 5900 Ultra 256Mb and it's pretty darn sweet.. Ciao.

AA maybe... Most would agree 2x in 16x12 makes an appreciable and welcome difference though. AF has only a passing relation to resolution though. I have a 9800pro and, despite having tried trading lower settings for better framerates or higher resolution, I always come back to 4aa/8af. Games' settings make a big difference too, for instance very high settings in Far Cry give you, among other things, birds & fish. Makes for a more immersive experience, I'll take IQ over resolution any day.

my atlantis 9600xt works like a charm at 1600x1200. light game player, most time video
editing and viewing though. Plus suggest a card without fan to get rid of the buzz 🙂

That's an interesting comment. What vid cards are there that do not have a fan? And are yet still decent? I don't NEED it to run games at 1600x1200, but have DVI for it.

A quieter computer would be nice...

I can run pretty much every game (with the exception of D3) at max detail @ 16x12. As long as I keep the AA at 2x or lower and Aniso at 4x or lower.

* FarCry
* Half-Life2
* CS:S
* UT2k4
* RTCW: ET
* etc

rofl 9800xt is a ripoff and 9800pro is and i vavor ati 9800xt is about 10% better than the 9800pro, huge price diff. 6600gt > 9800pro (either is this considering the 6600gt is same price and better 😀) < 9800xt ( not worth the money)

I've seen people reporting $170 prices on the card lately, so keep your chin up. You might be able to find one used, especially with so many confused people out there lately (like me! 🙂 ). Looks like at least one 256MB 6600GT will soon debut at around $200, which should drive prices down even more.
