I'm looking at posible geting a 2001 ford ranger with a 4.0L v-6 engine as my first truck.

I'm just curious as to what kinds of differences people are experiencing between the 4.0 v-6 and the more comon 3.0 v-6 in terms of fuel economy. Probably most of my driving will be in town driving(ex: college classes, work, etc) so thats what I'm most concerned with over highway mpg ratings. Does anyone have a ranger with eather one of those two engine sizes? If so what types of milage do you normaly get and how often do you have to fill up?

how many miles / day? if it is like < 10 or so, i don't think 2-5 mph will make much of a difference, you will still be using less than a gallon per day.

Almost no difference between the 3.0 and the 4.0.
I had the 3.0 in my Ranger and my dad had the 4.0 in his Explorer. Granted, the explorer weighed more, but we still got similar mileage.
What will make a bigger difference is the rear end gears. I believe they came in a 4.10 and 3.73 in '01

I had the Ranger back in '02. I now own an F-150 so I don't remember the exact numbers on the mileage.

I bought an '05 3.0L Ranger, and what I remember comparing between the 3L and the 4L was that the gas mileage was only 1 mpg apart on the window stickers. So basically... the difference is negligible. There may be minor differences between the '05's and the '01's but I wouldn't think it'd be much different in terms of economy.

edit: I get about 15-17 mpg on my 3.0, but my driving is 100% in-town and I also have a supercharger on it. Before the supercharger, my mileage was 16-18. It should also be noted that the 3.0 is really anemic, hence my heavy-footedness prior to the supercharger. If you don't have a lead foot, you can easily get higher mpgs. I've read of people getting well over 20-22 with the 3.0 V6's.
