Driving home last night, I smelt some burning plastic, the noticed wisps of smoke coming up from the steering wheel. (no pics, i was driving)

It stopped by the time I got to the dealer, but theyr'e charging me $400+ for labor and parts. Aparently It's not just a harness, so the pins need to be pulled and I need a new headlight stalk. (2001 Civic)

It's probably a ripoff, but oh well, that's what I get for freaking out when my car starts smoking.

While the tech was looking at the car, he recommended a bushing replacement. The wheel rattles sometimes. Probably happend when I hit a pothole. I'm not used to the crappy New England roads yet.

I have a mechanic that charges lower labor rates than the dealer, and will let me bring in parts. Anyone know if there's a standard set of parts i can get off Rock Auto that will cover the bushing repair? Also, how many hours this fix will be? (I think it's front right bushing. I'll ask for a report from the dealer when I pick up the car today.)

tl;dr

for 2001 Honda Civic
1) Front right bushing busted - what parts needed?
2) How many hours of labor?

Thanks!

Went to my mechanic (who charges $80/hr) He recommended replacing the control arm instead ($130 control arm instead of $30 bushing, but with the labor difference, he recommended the sturdier replacement)

The cost was half of the dealer's. Though, both sides were bad, so the cost ended up the same, just got both sides done.

Turns out a lot of my noise was from a bad bearing. Now I know what that sounds like. Will probably buy the cheapest bearings I can find on Amazon. Car only needs to last me ~2 more years.

I replaced the arms on my Del Sol rather than just the bushings, and the labor wasn't bad at all. The first side took me 2 hours but the second side only about 20 minutes, after I figured out "the trick". Control arms ran about $40 for my car, you should be able to find yours for close to as low.

Could probably do the bearing yourself but I don't have a good press so I had a mechanic do it.

Don't get the cheapest bearing. I have seen way to many problems with the cheap chinese brands. You can get Timken from rockauto for $40 each.
