I'm watching this movie for the first time right now. Is it drug-influenced or what? It's freaking WEIRD.

How odd. I just finished watching A Clockwork Orange. I believe both were either drug or Kubrick influenced, or perhaps both. :)

I can see how Clockwork can be considered weird but 2001 is great.

Space travel must really be that boring and the monolith, well, thats a whole new thread by itself.

I'd say it's certaintly possible...but are you referring just to the Kubrick movie or the Arthur C. Clarke book too?

2001 was pretty cool since it was way back in the 60's and still looks ok by today's standard.

my father used to make me watch 2001 everytime i was home sick at school and usually in the evenings...talk about a bad movie when you are sick with a fever!

i could see him doing more and more drugs as the movie goes on...the beg. is pretty normal, but as the movie goes on it gets weirder and weirder till the end where its just crazy

I was drug-influenced when I saw this movie and it was wierd.

The beginning with the monkies was crazy.

I need to read the book.

The books are pretty funky too. It doesn't help that he wrote the second book more based off the movie rather than the first book.

This movie is weird but you have to appreciate a real Science Fiction in it...
I mean the way they bothered to create an artificial gravity, ISS, Moon base.
I mean what is so magnificent about the movie is the fact that IT IS STILL a SCIFI movie even after all these years. Most of the stuff portraited like a smart computer, huge ISS and technology to hibernate and solar system travel is still a matter of the future. Heck they should call this movie Space Odyssey 2050...:p

*** SPOILER ***

Now what I never understood is when Dave ejects himself into the airlock, wouldn't he get some nasty frostbite at the very least? Even with the air from the probe escaping with him, space is pretty damn cold, especially as far out as Jupiter. Also, you'd think that the vacuum of space would suck the air out of his lungs and collapse them, no matter how tightly he tried to hold it in.
