Nice car, pull the trigger if it checks out OK. I always price the cars at kbb.com and I always only offer the value indicated by "Private Party - Fair condition".

I bought a 2000 740i last summer. I fell in love immediately. We've been inseperable ever since. and yes it is pimp and anyone who says otherwise is living under a rock.

you can check mine here: http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/gigapet/DSCF0310.jpg

EDIT:

as others have said do keep in mind the real cost come into play when you need to get it serviced. put it in perspective.......$400.00 for new brake pads.....not cheap.

I bought mine with a 36,000 mile warranty that covered just about everything but the regular maintenance things. You should consider such protection also.

I also bought it knowing that I have a good friend that works as a bmw technician and would do all my service off the record in his own shop and just charge me parts.

Had any problems with it yet? My Mother-In-Law had a 1999 740i she bought slightly used but she got rid of it a couple years later because she kept having problems with it. I remember her having to replace the power steering pump to the tune of about $2500.

I drove it a few times though and can attest to the fact that it is a nice car and it is quite a performer too.

Edit-When my wife and I had our 3 series we talked to our mechanic about possibly buying a 740i but he recommended against it due to high repair costs and unreliability.

The car you linked on ebay is currently listed for $23,000 and that is a bit high for a car that has 69,000 miles on the odometer. A second thing you need to consider is gas is curently $3 per galon and the 740's V8 sucks gas like no tomorrow. A short trip to the grocery store in that 740i will cost you $5 (maybe $6) if you include wear, depriciation, maininence and fuel.

Any major problems? I heard the maintenance on a BMW is going to be costly. Especially for these older cars that need rotors, etc replaced.

Yeah the gas is going to suck :(

costs me close to 80 bucks now to fill up. 22 gallons @ $3.00+ per gallon of premium......yeah not cheap my commute to work is only 7 miles though.

there is some dead pixels in the dash but not bad enough to warrant a replacement. I had to do my 60,000 mile service.......but my friend did it for 100 bucks(only needs to be serviced every 20k-30k miles though). I need new brakes and coolant this month and thats gonna be about 5 bills. soo...... 600 for the first year I've had it.

I just replaced my front pads on my 98 540 and it was $100 installed...

Also, those dash pixels and radio/MID pixels are replaced by BMWNA if you contact them. All you have to do is pay for labor. Some people had bad luck and they only offered 1/2 price on the part, not full price. See this link: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83256

$600 a year is cheap for maintainance. I spend about $3K a year on maintainance for my cars (but I drive 30,000 miles a year)

My bro has a 99 740i, and I recall seeing 87 as the minimum octane on his gas cap. On my 98 540 however, it states that it requires 89 min.

I doubt I've spent that much on my daily drivers in the past 6 years.

I agree. I had the option of a the newer 2002 body style.....didnt do it for me. I think It lost alot of that character and the aggressive look that the 99-2001 7-series was known for.

Usually this is an optical illusion due to trim like side skirts and air dam being body-colored instead of black. Earlier 7s had it as an option, later models like this one it's standard.

hell yes, the E39 5 series is the sexist production sedan to date IMO with the E39 M5 topping that list.

If you do not get an extended, bumper-to-bumper service contract I would suggest you be ready to mortgage your house to pay for repairs and maintenance. BTW, I've owned nothing but BMWs, both car and motorcycles, for the last 12 years.

If you can do some of the stuff yourself they are great cars. The problems with these were the electrical gremlins, but this is a late model of that design so most of the kinks should be worked out of that one.

Im not going to buy the ebay car. I just showed it as an example.

I'll def. get a bmw certified bmw 740i if I was to get one. I believe they have full warranty for 3 years 36,000/miles? Something like that which is good enough to help me sleep at nights.
