2000 Loses Profile (missing in registry) ???

I started up my computer this morining and during startup I get a message box saying that my profile cannot be located; it is missing from the registry. Once I get to the desktop I am given the "new" windows startup screen to set up internet accounts, email, etc. My programs are all there but all my files are missing just like when I first installed the system. Periodically I was getting disk errors upon startup where checkdisk would make repairs before starting, but that is the only problems I was experiencing prior.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the "disk errors" finally hit a vital file. Suggest you back up essential data and, before reinstalling, carefully check drive and controller integrity.

Yep, sounds like your ntuser.dat file got corrupted so the system create a new profile for you. Your apps are still installed, you'll need to recreate the shortcuts for them on the start menu. Also, any per user customizations are lost.

I'd strongly consider the other posters recommendation of a reinstall after checking the drive unless you know what caused the drive to get screwed up (and power failures or the like lately?)

I ran IBM's drive Fitness test and both drives checked out ok.

I assume its a software thing then?

and I will reistall whole system . . .

Where do I locate my emails to back them up?

Start in c:\documents and settings\username.

Likely when you got a new profile you got a username.000 file or similar.

When same sort of thing happened to me about two years ago, it turned out to be that a retaining clip on an SDRAM module had opened. Spent several days troubleshooting drives, reinstalling, etc., before I noticed it.
