I don't get those economics. How are they making money on that?

They're making plenty of money. It's like buying arcade tokens or any other imaginary currency.

You may want to hold off and see if Amazon runs another "free 100 coins" with purchase promotion on multiple free apps of the day.

They did this earlier this week for 9 apps, making it possible to get 900 free coins. Then just buy GTA: SA for 699 of those coins and get another 2000 for a total haul of 2201 coins.

Plus, they have several games where when you use coins, you get 50% back. Simpson's tapped out is one of them.

Thanks for the excellent deal, OP! I just now spent 699 free coins to get 2000 free coins, for a net positive of 1301 coins or $13.01 in free app/content purchases from Amazon's app store. You can't really beat that! Amazon warns that the game may not be compatible with my devices, but I was still able to purchase.

They lose money on each sale, but make it up with volume.:)
Amazon is all about playing the long game so my guess this is just for building mindshare. Its probably cheaper for them to sell $10 worth of coins for $9.50 then to pay 10 transaction fees for $1 apps and what better way to get people using them by giving them away.

Kindle Fire HDX needs a 2.5GB update on the game. I let it sit overnight (10 hours) and it only got through 17% of the download. lol. 2.5GB usually takes less than an hour on my other computers.
