I think the $99 600GB VelociRaptor might have been a Shellshocker. IMO that was actually a reasonable deal as 512GB SSDs run $350+ and at the time deals on 1TB 7200RPM were $70.

Different drive, but the HGST 4TB 7200RPM 64MB internal drive is $249 on B&H:

Can't wait for future hot deals on this baby! Not yet at a price/GB ratio that makes me impulse buy.

I couldn't wait, i max out on my 1.5x4 raid, and was looking for 3x4, but didn't want to migrate the data twice, so i just went for it..

It was $199 for awhile over the holidays, wish I had bitten!

That's a pretty large price premium when you can grab the external 4TB Seagate for $179 at costco or $190 at amazon. Obviously there are issues with removing a drive from an external enclosure, and some people have seagate-phobia...

When you buy the Hitachi you are also buying from WDC
http://www.wdc.com/en/company/hgst/

This is a very strange situation
How can 2 similar drives from same company have dif performance. The controller? Fewer platters? Then why offer both?

There are Hitachi Deskstars and enterprise quality Ultrastars
I bought a bunch of the UltraStar 3TB a ways back on a big sale and have had no issues with them, but if you look at the comments on NE, the Ultra had many DOA and fails, but the DeskStar didnt.

I would prob buy a couple of these (Hitachi) and RAID them on Intel 3G ports for data, but since the flood and the acquisition, I really dont know where they stand on QC now at all. I would especially like to know whose factory they are made in at the present time.

And yes, i hate Seagate, wont have anything to do with them.

I really wish HGST didn't drop 5400 line. I'd rather have 5400RPM drive for quieter and cooler operation rather than buy 7200 drive...
