Before i left work today i started formatting and installing winxp sp2 on my WD200JN 200 gig harddrive. it was at 20 percent when i left. I get home 6 hours later after work and come home to see my computer stuck at post since i dont have a floopy drive there was an error. I try to reformat and reinstall windows on the 200 gig hard drive but now in windows install there 1 only 1 unpartioned 33000 section and nothing else. The hard drive is stuck on 33gigs and it wont even detect in windows on my other computer. Is my hd broken?

You need to format as NTFS not FAT32

You need to make sure you don't have a jumper on the back of the drive isn't set to factory test or to limit the capacity to 32 GB.

You need large drive support in both your BIOS and your operating system (XP requires service pack 1 or 2).

I'd suggest you check the above, delete any existing partitions, start over.

Hmm yeah it deffinately has to do with my bios. In bios the drive only shows as 33gigs but after running western digitals maintence disk and doing repair mmr boot the system now boots fine. The only problem is it takes like 5 mins to get to windows, afterwards it normal. Its deffinately the hd because i have the same data/settings on my 40gig and it boots in just about 3 secs. hmmm what can i do to improve the boot time?

Edit: Actaully the drive doesnt boot at all after the mmr fix. It says some long error message about arc. I have sp2 and k8n neo4 plat. I dont even care about 200gigs anymore but it wont even run in 132 anymore. =( This is driving me nuts. I already reinstalled windows 15 times since yesterday but after 2-3 reboots the system wont boot anymore =(

If the BIOS only sees the drive as 33 GB (and the drive itself doesn't have a jumper set to make it that way) you need to go to the motherboard manufacturer website and download a newer BIOS and the program / instructions to update / "flash" your BIOS.

I have the newest bios for my system. But i think maybe its a setting in bios that keeps doing this, i also have 200gigs enabled in windows registry

About the 32 limitation, I suggest you get the utility from western digital site. They have a program that helps you to format the disk and also to limit the capacity to 32 G. Just use it to reverse it to full capacity.

well this build has turned out to be a nightmare..... i keep getting 1 problem after another. I am now able to break the drive down to 131gig and 68 gig partitions. Winxp installs fine on the 131 gig and everything loads all fine and dandy. I install the ati drivers. Then the nforce 4 drivers, sound drivers. Everything works fine. But as soon as i put in linskys wifi network card, windows wont boot. Even if i take it out windows will not boot or even let me go into safe mode. The system just keeps rebooting after a wifi card comes in contact with the board..... argh any ideas? I cant go back into windows to see whats wrong and all these windows reinstalls to attempt to get the wifi to work is really really really time consuming at the moment im up 2 27 windows reinstalls in 2 days =(

Edit: i figured it out Nforce drivers were installing and ata controller that overode the one from wd. Thats why it would boot when i added new drivers. The wifi problem was fixed after i installed the 2 other network ports on teh mobo, thx for the input
