OK, let me rephrase for Mr Technicality, why did it take ~3 years longer for IDE than it did SCSI?

<---SCSI Seagate 15K.3 and everything else is backed up to DVDRW. There's no need for failing IDE drives!

Too expensive? With the cost required to make it that fast, you might as well get SCSI I guess.

Try capturing video in avi. Trust me, 200g doesn't last long, plus you still need space to edit then compress to mpeg.

and how much rebate?

Retail. Costs $300 then there's a $120 rebate. So about $200 with tax is what I'm paying.

were those the ones on the endcap in the book section? i was thinking about getting a couple of the 80s and RAID 1ing my mp3s and documents and other things that would be a pain in the arse to lose. probably can't get two rebates though... thats where cash and a friend come in :D

i've got an 80 gig drive being used to record tv, mostly. my mp3 collection takes up about 20 gigs and i'm no where near halfway through my CDs yet. though my average kbps is ~194 i changed encoding from --r3mix to --alt preset standard about halfway through those, and the alt presets take up quite a bit more space.

computer 3: 80
total = 360

They were in the harddrive section by the motherboards.

I use my TV tuner to record also, and videos definately eat hard drive space!

I'm going to be ripping my 1,200+ CDs to lossless FLAC, that will take about 400 GB of space. A 1,200 CD changer accessible in my home office, the living room, or on the lifecycle if I get a PDA with WiFi -- sweet!

(I can then also get a cube or small desktop with 120 MB drive and clone it all as 234 kbps VBR MP3s and take that to the office -- sweet^2 !)

I have a 40 gig 7200 RPM drive i just got back from an RMA about 4 months ago - want to trade drives? I'll throw in cash to even out the deal.

Nah, it's nice to know that I have the room to expand. Getting a 40 GB drive would only leave me with 15GB free. While that is a lot, 55GB is much better!

Thanks though.
