Outpost.com is selling a cheap low end system this week.
Specs:
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
SiS 741 GX & 964L Chipset
128MB DDR RAM
40GB HDD
CD-ROM/Floppy HDD
Onboard Video, Sound, Ethernet, Modem
250 Watt PSU
AGP Slot and 2 PCI Slots
Lindows/Linspire 4.5
Keyboard and Mouse

I think this is a warm deal at least. Probably a perfect gift for parents/grandparents with little computer experience. Upgrade their aging PII 333MHz for them. Might even work as a second computer for a child to do school work on. Windows would be another $99, but for most of the basic tasks that this machine would be doing, Linspire is a nice Distro with a good amount of software and would be more than enough. And while the hardware is weak, it shouldn't have a problem running OpenOffice, XMMS and Firefox at the same time.

Considering that the PSU is only 250W, do you guys think I could get a FX5200 to run without having to replace the PSU? I told my mom about this and she want's it for my younger sister. School work and light gaming is all the machine is going to have to do. Any other ideas, I'm trying to keep the hardware costs in the sub $275 range.

More RAM. Black friday is around the corner, be on the look out for a 256MB (512MB???) DDR deal at OMAX, BB, CC, etc.

Good Deal for a functional PC. I say either jump on this if needed or wait until they offer the similar PC except with a cd-rw and win xp home for $279 to $299. Fry's has offered the $279 deal a few times in the last 3 months.

3 or 4 weeks ago Fry's/Outpost had this for $99. Now that was hot. I'm waiting for it to drop again then I'll grab one for a spare PC/Folding/Downloading box.

Still at the current price, not too bad.

I too have seen cheaper. The $199 price point is the regular sale price for this computer at Fry's. Its on sale here in Houston this weekend. Fry's sometimes has $149, $129, or $99 computers during a big sale. Black Friday is coming and that when I expect this to be real cheap.

For ~$200 why not try to get in on a Dell refurb?

Granted, <$200 machines are pretty few and far between, but when they have some free shipping promotions, you can usually get low end (2400/3000) machines for under $250 with just a little work. Get really lucky you might get under $200.

I personally have bought quite a few PIV machines for well under $250, some even under $200. You just need a free shipping promo.

Of course the AGP slot is an issue... but I have gotten PIV 4600's (w/ AGP) for under $220 before. The cheap cheapies are usually celeron dimension 2400/3000 (no agp slot) though.

That with a Dell warranty, WinXP, keyboard, mouse, software CD's, and sometimes random niceties like DVD, CDRW, or even speakers. The Dell refurb pricing is sporadic. I'll take a refurb with OS installed vs. a oem box w/o.

Out of the 10 or so odd I've bought, all of them have looked like brand new computers with used packaging materials. Half of them looked totally new. None have been damaged or had cosmetic probems.

All my mom and pop machines are Dell refurbs. Seems to me the best deal by far, and with rock solid, stable hardware. Luv AMD as you will, but if the box is mine to worry about, I'd rather have an intel chipset in there (important when you are the tech support for the machine, lol).
