200/266FSB?

I have a mobo here that is 200fsb only (IWill KV200-R).. will a AMD Athlon XP 266fsb CPU work in the board. They are actually cheaper than what was in the board already (Athlon 1.1Ghz/200FSB).. I found like Athlon XP 1.4/266 for better deals.. I'm pretty sure the fsb would be backwards compatible since its just a system clock and as long as it can handle 200fsb it should be ok.. let me know.

thanks in advance,

I really doubt it would work. 1st off the 2600+ is a Barton core and the processor support doesn't even mention AthlonXP support ,here, just Athlon support, T-Birds.

But if it were even to reconize the Barton the FSB would be a problem. It's stable max is only 100 MHz while the 2600+ would require 133 MHz FSB to achieve it's total clock speed of about 1.9 GHz. Now you could "possibly" overclock the board to 133 MHz to meet the FSB of the 2600+ but you'll be stressing the components on the PCI and AGP.

Then again, he could underclock the CPU to match the board's FSB. That's assuming the BIOS recognizes it in the first place.
Is the clock multiplier locked on the Bartons? If so, can it be unlocked? That would give him a chance to run the CPU at something close to full speed on the slower bus.

Your 1.1GHz Athlon has a multiplier of 11 since 11 x 100MHz = 1100 - remember its 100MHz pumped twice. A 1.4GHz Athlon has a multiplier of 10.5 since 10.5 x 133MHz = 1400. But your mobo would only be able to handle it at 1.05GHz which is worse that what you have now.

Your mobo should be able to handle a Duron (Morgan) upto 1.3GHz which should be easier to find. Roughly equivalent to a 1.2GHz Athlon due to the lower L2 cache. The KT133 doesn't support any Athlon XP on the whole so that should be avoided. The highest would be 1.4GHz Athlon (200FSB) which is pricey for this reason.

The 1.4GHz Athlon (266FSB) can of course handle more than 1.05GHz so it depends on whether you can actually unlock the CPU and adjust the multiplier using the mobo. IIRC, most KT133 boards supported multipliers upto 12.5 which would put it at 1.25GHz. Your board does have FSB adjustments upto 166MHz i.e. 333MHz, but without any PCI/AGP/RAM/IDE locks you'll run into trouble past 120MHz.

I suggest that you stick the fastest Duron (morgan) u can find and OC it a little, unless u can get a cheap suitable athlon in the US.

lol i keep hearing 2600+ and i was lookin at a 1700+ am i confused about something there.. the last post was alot of help.. ive always been told durons were junk so i wanted to avoid those and seeing as though im selling this .. the motherboard specs say duron 600-700mhz, and athlon up to 1000mhz, and i had it running at 1100 with a BIOS update.

in reply to ur PM:

ok there are two issues here:

you could put a 1.4GHz Athlon (NOT XP!) 266FSB into your PC and I am certain that it would at 1.05GHz due to the 200FSB. Indeed, RAM, IDE and PCI devices permitting you could even overclock this a little (maybe 110MHz (220FSB)).

you could NOT use a Athlon XP as there are some architectural differences that prevent you from doing so.

I don't know how much the Athlon 1.4GHz 266FSB costs in US but it is likely to be pricey. So you may be better off getting a 1.3GHz Duron or even 1.3/1,2 GHz 200FSB Athlon which are sure to work.

In summary AVOID Athlon XP and Duron above 1.4GHz.

In addition to the above posts....While there ARE KT-133, and KT-133a boards that can use 266 and 333 Mhz XP processors (most notably the Abit KT7a), and KT266a motherboards than run 333 Mhz XP and Barton CPUs (IE ABit KR7A/133/R), there is no guarantee that your particular mobo/Bios will recognize it. I have never heard of the IWill KV200 supporting the XP processors, but that in itself means little. Check with AMD motherboards website. They prety much have tried every AMD combination around.

If not, there are plenty of CPUs on E-Bay that will work in your mobo.

I highly doubt an athlon xp would work with that board as if it started out at a fsb of 100 I doubt even a bio update would allow an XP. I think your only opition is to get another mboard or just look for a 100 fsb T-bird or duron.

The k7s5A is on sale at newegg right now for $42 and would take your current SD-ram and DDR if you upgrade later. You could definately use a newer athlonXP in it, run it at 100Mhz FSB(200Mhz effective), then upgrade it with some DDR later and up the FSB to its normal 133(266 effective) speed.
