Dubai would be a cool place to visit, but I definitely wouldn't live there. The Guy/Girl ratio is ridic. I don't know what it is for Western Ex-pats though, but I imagine it'd be pretty bad

So its like 90% of all other foreign places.
Shitty drivers, language barriers and different laws?

Well shit. Who the hell told them they could be different then us Americans?

Seems like the writer wanted to point out only the fallacies of that place. In fact it sounds more like an agenda to me.
About the sexing on the beach, why not obey the rules of the country that you're in. What about that or maybe the rules shouldn't apply to foreigners?

I bet I could write 20 reasons not to want to move anywhere. None of her reasons surprised me in the least.... That said, any place that is hotter than Chicago is a place I wouldn't want to live ... it's bad enough it gets over 90 degrees here. I couldn't imagine living somewhere where it's over 100 on a regular basis...

Scorching hot, restrictive liquor laws, Muslim social and legal traditions, and supported by the modern day equivalent of slavery. It never exactly made my short list of places to live either.

Might visit someday though just to see it.

We have enough social and moral intolerence and laws in the US, why would I want even more?

While I do agree with you to an extent, lets face it. Some places just suck. I will never understand why people chose to live in places that are simply hard to live in. No water, no capacity for agriculture, no animals to hunt? Let's set up shop here! (I'm speaking of thousands of years ago)

The Middle East is called the birthplace of civilization. As opposed to the pinnacle of civilization, otherwise people would have just stayed there.

I would love to visit Dubai for a day or two, just to say I've been, but I certainly wouldn't want to live there. I enjoy freedom too much.

The middle east got it's influence by it's location. It was the truck stop along the trade routes. The only thing keeping it more than Afghanistan in the pecking order is the combination of the "holy land" (which has been fought over since time began...) and oil. As hurt as the US would be if oil suddenly stopped existing, those countries would be even more hurt.

The reason why the company has to sign off on everything is to make it easier for "corporate slavery". I'm honestly surprised that it hasn't come up more than it already has. Though more than one person has said that Dubai is fueled by speculators. Meaning that the great towers could end up being slightly more finished than The Ryugyong Hotel if the bubble were to burst before anything could develop.

So, I am going to Dubai the last week of november so this was an interesting read. But overall, its not any different than say going to my hometown in India. So to me, I guess i am going to feel right at home. Anyway, this is the closing remarks of Dubai on Travel Advisor....

And one more sidenote, for a slightly different crowd: Dubai would be a great place to bring children. It's safe and clean in comparison to the vast majority of the world outside of the U.S./Europe, and there are lots of families around that all seemed to be having a lovely time. Kids get to be sensitized to a culture they may not be exposed to otherwise (speaking from a U.S. perspective), with all the comforts of being able to order French fries and a milkshake at almost any restaurant!

For all the money that they have, they could have purchased a habitable island somewhere and build it up like they did with Dubai and it'll be a much more viable business venture. I don't think I'll ever visit the place, even if they pay me.

Having been brought up here and having spent the summer here, I'd say that the twenty reasons mentioned in that article are completely valid and are true! However, her public toilet comment is kinda stupid.. I've never had to go to a public toilet! Just go to a hotel for gods sake! There are tons of them.

I would say that in the case of the British couple having sex on the beach, they deserve what they got! It isn't England so they should respect the local laws of the country ( no matter how ridiculous they might think it is).
