20 pin PSU

Hi folks,

I'm planning to reuse a Shuttle case that accepts mini-ITX motherboards. All the Shuttle PSUs only have 20-pin ATX connectors - I'm planning to use an adaptor to 24-pin, which should connect power to those extra 4 pins. . . I shouldn't have any issues doing this should I?

Looking at this motherboard http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8H61I/
I'm quite happy that that board has the right connectors for my case in places that the cables will reach. Not quite decided which CPU yet, but probably just get an i5-2500K. I know I can't overclock on an H61 board, but they're no more expensive than the regular i5-2500 as far as I can see. . . may as well get the K for resale value or if I want to change motherboard later.

The same PSU is currently running a Q8400 (95W) so I'm happy that the PSU should take the load okay.

I mentioned once that my Mom bought a retail HP Athlon II x2 recently. One of the weird things I noticed when I looked inside it was that there was a 20-pin PSU hooked up to a 24-pin mobo! There's just nothing in those other 4 pin holes! Evidently it works; though I don't know if it would work on a higher-power CPU like yours.

Ken is correct, you don't actually have to use an adapter if you don't want to. The adapter doesn't really do anything but split the power and ground wires, no additional current capacity is added.

Fair enough - I'd read in a couple of places that just plugging in the 20 pins you've got will "sometimes work, sometimes not" . . . in any case, I will likely need the adapter to get the cable to reach.
