20 pin PSU on 24 pin MOBO?

The title says it all - I I have a board that will POST with a 20 pin PSU hooked to the 24 pin connector. The only 24 pin PSU I have is in my main rig - I want to be able to test this board without tearing apart my main rig.

What are the risks associated with doing this - it would seem there are no ill effects. Can I run it for more than a couple minutes?

Plug the ATX connector in the proper way and there will be no problems as long as it is a decent quality power supply.

I know it's plugged in properly - and it appears to work without issue.

What are the other 4 pins for if they're (apparently) not needed?
