20-pin PSU into a 24-pin motherboard

I am troubleshooting my computer right now to check if I have a bad power supply. I've taken out the power supply for an old computer and the largest connector it has is 20-pin. My motherboard supports 24-pins and I'm wondering if I can still hook it up without hurting anything.

I'm planning on just hooking up the motherboard, the processor, and a case fan. If those turn on, I know the problem is my PSU.

It will only be temporary, until I can figure out if my power supply really is bad.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Upon closer inspection of the test power supply, I find that it doesn't have any of the small 3-pin connectors. I checked my motherboard manual (It's an A8N-SLI Deluxe) and the connector that I'm worried about is labeled "PWR_FAN" and connects directly into the PSU.

Anyone know if I need to have this hooked in? If the test works, I'll only have to run the system for like 15 seconds.

That's a fan power connector; in the case of a PSU it just allows the PSU to report the fan's stats to the mobo. You don't need it.
