im buying a 24-pin motherboard TOMORROW and have a 20-pin power supply...i will be upgrading to a power supply with 24-pin at some point, but for now i wont even be using the pci-e slot, so any effect it wouldve had wont matter. i just need to know where to position the 20-pin connector in the 24-pin slot (right word?)... in this picture would i put the 20-pin connector all the way to the left, right or centered?

i need an answer as soon as possible because im ordering tomorrow and expect it to be here as late as 4 days from then, could be as little as 2.

you will be fine those extra four pins are for the pci express bus but since you will not be using it you are in the clear

Doesn't tell him where to position the connector.

Consult your board's manual when you get it; it should be in there.

It should only fit one way. IIRC, if your looking at the PS slot from the side that has the little clip thing, it should align on the left.

It doesn't work that way. The clips don't line up when you use a 20pin in a 24pin connector, obviously. It will tell you in your mb manual, if it doesn't, leave pins 11,12,23, and 24 open.

How are those numbered?

the 20 pin will only fit one way. For some reason, the clip doesn't always align, mine didn't. just make sure it wont slip off while in use, mine has not.

K8NF-9 requires only a 20pin PSU and it uses Pci-e.

It has a 24 pin connector but it has a 4 pin plug on the right most side of the connector. On this paricular MB you can use either a 20 or a 24 pin PSU

Here's a picture of a 20 pin in a 24 pin socket on my vnf4ultra. The clip is on the back side of the connector.

Edit: Link hopefully fixed now.

The latches must be on the same side and the orange wire end of the 20-pin should be against its end of the 24-pin socket. If the latches don't catch - use a couple dabs of hot-glue to keep the plug from backing out due to thermal cycling.

Does my link above work now? It works for me, but that doesn't mean anything, does it work for anyone else? My 20 pin would only fit one way, it has rounded sockets in some of the sockets that won't let it go in wrong. The retaining clip(on the plug) is on the right of the retaining tab of the socket(I think that's right).

Howdy,

I use an NF4 Chaintech motherboard with a 20 pin PSU.

On the first picture you listed, put the power supply all the way to the right side. Make sure the clips that normally secure the psu are on the same side (though they don't line up).

It should go in nice and easy, any pressure and it's in the wrong way.

Hope this helps.

I didn't secure it. It hasn't fallen out yet. There is a decent amount of friction on mine to keep it in. You could use duct tape, it fixes everything :).

Just put the plug in the socket on the end that is towards the dimm slots. Using a 20pin psu didn't affect the running of a pci-e card for me. I'm using a 6600gt(no external power connector, draws all power from the slot) and haven't had any problems with my 20 pin antec 350w psu with my 24 pin vnf4 ultra mobo. I don't know what those extra 4 pins are for, the pci-e still works without 'em.

will i be able to get it back out easily w/ hot glue?
also...what happens if it drips onto the mobo?

Yes, hot glue will peel off from most surfaces like those nylon connector shells with a fingernail or pocket knife. Just use the low heat setting.

I wouldn't use hot glue. Just stick it in there. Noone here has had any problem with it like that. If it starts to pop off, then do something about it....and then I would use silly puddy.
