20 people killed when local Tour boat flips over in Lake George NY USA

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. - The passengers aboard a tour boat that capsized on Lake George, killing 20 people, were sitting in portable, plastic seats that slid sharply to one side of the vessel just before it flipped over, authorities said Monday.

Wayne Bennett, State Police superintendent, said that investigators still do not know what initially caused the Ethan Allen to tip. But he said survivors reported that the unfastened plastic, slat benches moved rapidly to one side before the boat went over in the chilly mountain lake.

the lake water temp was 68F when it happened, for me thats not chilly

i was watching it on the news this morning they suspect that the wake from a bigger boat passing nearby is what caused it

It would have had to be MASSIVE wake in order to flip a boat that big. I've been in seas that were 12 ft + in a boat about that size and it didn't flip. All the people would have to have been sitting on one side of the boat for it to capsize like that.

those lake boats have nearly a flat bottom and they really arnt THAT big, and from a physics standpoint the wake wouldent need to be guge
if it hit side on and the boat listed to one side causing everyone to slide to that side it woudl go right over

ive been in 10+ foot sees in a 24 foot boat before and it was fine however it was designed to do that

The boat is being raised right now.

Sad story.

Police say passengers slid across deck before boat capsized

(Lake George, NY - AP) ? Authorities say passengers reported sliding to one side of an Adirondack tour boat before it capsized Sunday, killing 20 people.

The 47 senior citizens from Michigan were on a Northeastern foliage tour when the Ethan Allen overturned yesterday afternoon on Lake George. Nearby boaters helped rescue 27 passengers. Eight in the hospital this afternoon.

Wayne Bennett, State Police superintendent, says survivors reported the boat tilted, then the unfastened plastic, slat benches moved rapidly to one side before the boat went over in the chilly mountain lake.

Governor Pataki says officials have temporarily suspended the license of the boat captain Richard Paris and the tour boat company's two other vessels while the investigation continues.

Warren County Sheriff Larry Cleveland says so far he sees "no criminal culpability" by Paris, a retired state trooper.

The captain told authorities it was hit by waves from at least one other vessel and capsized as he tried to steer out of them.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

The owner of the boat that capsized on

Lake George on Sunday says his company has been in

business for more than a quarter-century and had a "perfect"

safety record until the tragedy.

James Quirk, owner of Shoreline Cruises, read a brief statement

to reporters on Tuesday, saying he's "shocked and saddened" by what happened.

A 38-foot boat overturned in about 65 feet of water. Twenty of

the 47 elderly passengers died.

Police: Tour boat company could face fine as low as $25

(Lake George, NY - AP) ? The company that owned the tour boat that capsized on Lake George could face a fine as low as 25 dollars for not having enough crew members on board.

That's according to state police Major Gerald Meyer during a news conference held this morning.

Meyer says a state inspector determined that the 40-foot Ethan Allen needed an extra crew member in addition to the pilot when between 21 and 48 people were aboard. The boat is owned by Shoreline Cruises located in the village of Lake George.

Prediction: some politician and/or geriatrics support group is going to be heralding increased fines because the fine doesn't match the scope of the tragedy. Let's play "Guess Who?"

One more crew member wasn't going to help much in watching over 47 passengers.
