20% pay cut and happier.

So way back when the economy was tanking. I posted how I got a 20% pay cut. At first I was unhappy/panicky.

But as time has gone by and I have adjusted my lifestyle I am actually overall happier now. Knowing I cannot afford extra things makes buying much easier, and life in general much simpler. The only luxury I have is Internet.... that is about it, no cell phone bill, and no cable tv. I don't eat out anymore and make all my own meals. I am actually saving more per month than I was when I made a lot more. I even rented out a room to save a little more money.

I think I like this. Anyone else go through this ever?

I took a ~20% pay cut a few years ago and was happier... but that's because I reduced my commute by about 70 miles/80 minutes (each way).

If anyone else would like to give it a try, I'd be more than willing to let you send me 20% of your income.

lol taking 20% paycut would in no way make me happier unless i was working 20% less at the same job or was working a different job altogether.

Yeah, people forget that having huge piles of money around can be stressful and can easily wind up being spent on things you don't need or want. A friend of mine is very, very wealthy and I'd say he's not any happier than me, even though he, on average, makes about 50% of my yearly salary per day. It's all about your attitude, what you do, and how you approach life.

I never overspent... the 15% pay cut sucked and continues to... it's more the principle that they can still retain you at such a lower rate. M'fuggers.

Money has nothing to do with happiness. Learn this early and be happy.

Please give me all of yours so that I can learn this lesson on my own.

you think someone that would say that has any money? 😛

money won't make someone happy, but it will prevent you from being unhappy...if that makes sense

Financial security will ease a lot of areas in your life so that you can focus on doing things that make you happy.

Do you happen to be a young musician, living with 6 roomates, and smoking pot every night?

Otherwise, that's bullshit.

Now I'm not saying that having lots of money will automatically make someone happy. But being broke and not having the freedom to do the things you want to do, sure as hell makes you less happy.

so leave.

I'm sure he is thing about it just as many people are.

Something similar happened a number of months ago. I started spending more paying down my debt (mortgage+heloc), and my bank account keeps going up...

If things keep going as planned, in three years I won't have a HELOC payment, and I look around and just haven't been seeing much that I really want to spend money on. I just got done fixing up my garage and want to re-paint my house and put new trim, but just am not in a hurry. Financially, I'm just happy.

I'm glad you're happier OP.

Me too. I took a forced 5% cut from my employer last year...still not happy about it but I truly enjoy not working all of the overtime that I used to work.

You could have been just as happy with more money but CHOSE not to be. More money makes your life more comfortable. Saying just because you got a paycut you're a happier person makes no sense. Remember it's only poor people that say rich people are unhappy. Remember it's only ugly people that say beauty is only on the inside.
