Newegg is giving 20% off all external enclosures with code EMCXTWR43 exp.3/17

One of the more interesting (to me) external enclosures is this Vantec NexStar HX4 which is $99.99 with free shipping and holds four SATA HDDs in a single USB 3.0 enclosure. The code would put it at $80 shipped.

If only it had some hardware RAID 5 baked in! Even so, what atrocious placement of the 80mm fan. It does nothing for hdd 2-4.

The Zalman VE300 is an awesome little SSD enclosure. They do have some quality control issues on the drive, but I haven't seen anything else with a similar functionality. Def worth checking out. They also have a $10 rebate on them. Up to 4 rebates per household.

45% of the people at Newegg gave it 2 stars or less....the silver version it was 60%......yea I'd say it has some issues alright.

Any good SATA HDD docks that people would recommend? Mostly for 3.5" but 2.5" support would be nice.

Anyone in the market for an enclosure should also consider one of the entry-level NAS boxes for around the same price. There's a Buffalo and Iomega 2-bay unit that often hit the $80-$100 range. Right now Newegg is offering a Netgear version running the same Marvell ASIC for $100 after promo:

The downside of the NAS boxes is less capacity (4-bay runs $200+), less wired connectivity options, generally lower transfer speeds, and fewer RAID options, but the huge upside is that they are network-accessible by any device on your network.

I've been using the Iomega 2-bay unit for a few months and love it. Works great from all my PCs, handheld/mobile devices, and even my smart TVs. I can even record premium encrypted channels from my SD HD HomeRun Prime directly to the NAS using the iSCSI feature. Great way to re-purpose some of my older 1TB drives that I wanted to move out of my main rig.

One of my Samsung SSDs came with a USB-to-SATA adapter, so I now just carry around an old OCZ Agility 2 SSD as my external HDD, using the adapter and no enclosure. It's nice being able to copy a GB of data in a few seconds.
