20 monitor capable single computer system

If you had to build a 20 monitor capable computer system, what would you go about doing? As far as the lines of processor base, specific motherboard, RAM and most importantly, video cards.

The system doesn't need all DVI or all VGA.

I know that there are a few nvidia cards and Matrox cards that support 4 monitors, but what would you recommend?

The system will be linux based, not Windows.

The HIGHLY TECHNICAL forum is not for purchase advice.

20 monitors with independent contents, or 20 copies of the same stuff?

If the former, it can't be Windows, since XP's limit is 9 or 10 monitors IIRC.

You're going to need a board with many PCI Express slots, and PCIE graphics cards that do many monitors. Unless Matrox already have a PCIE quad card, you might need to resort to an older workstation card that has lots of PCI-X slots and use their 64-bit PCI quad.

I would however inquire with Matrox before going ahead ... before you send yourself off into a driver configuration nightmare.

You could use 3 quad cards and 4 of those triple head to go boxes they just came out with. Linky Probably be expensive, but will get you to 20 using only 3 slots.

Some older monitors allow serial linking of a single VGA signal. One signal source can drive a multitude of monitors.

Is there a reason why you couldn't use multiple systems, and some sort of network communication / terminal server-client system?
