20" LCD Non-WideScreen vs. 24" LCD WideScreen

Hi,

I do a lot of programming and currently use a 21" CRT that over the years has gotten blurry, so I decided to look into getting an LCD.

If I get a 20" LCD Non-WideScreen it will give me pretty much the same vertical and horizontal space that I am used to working on.

What I'm not sure of is if I get a 24" LCD WideScreen, will I have the same vertical area as a 20" LCD Non-WideScreen / 21" CRT or will it be less because it is a WideScreen?

I looked around but could not find any actual dimension of the physical LCD screen, most places give you the size of the whole LCD monitor. My goal was to draw something out in Photoshop so I could actually see the difference in size.

And finally, I also like to play the occasional FPS games, are there any problems with playing these games on a WideScreen?

I'm cautiously assuming that an ATI1900/1950 can run the required resolutions for a WideScreen LCD....is this true?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Mitch

Get the 24in WS. I don't care what you do on it, 24in WS>*

And a X1900/X1950 should be able to handle it just fine.

For a size comparison

A 24" 16:10 display is significantly larger than a 20" 4:3. You lose absolutely nothing.

Any modern video card can handle the resolution fine, the only concern with 1920x1200 panels is you need a fairly powerful card (or cards) to play any modern game at high settings.

Thanks for the great link!!

I would hope that an ATI1900/1950 would be powerful enough to handle it...what do you think?

Not to get your hopes up, but stay away from the Dell 2407fpw/wfp. It's still too buggy at Rev A02 - There's dithering in every mode but Desktop mode (the default setting) so you can't save custom profiles. When scrolling many webpages, there are errors (certain things lag behind others - it's weird). The interface is slow and a bit clunky...

I'd stick to a safer 2405fpw (not as good brightness but none of these silly bugs) or another brand, like BenQ or Acer.
