The 8X DVD-R's (Japan) are burning at 16X on my BenQ 1620. I think I might have to go back for some more. =]

Newb question. Is it rumor that DVD+R is better than DVD-R? Are they essentially the same for newer dvd players? Where DVD+R are more compatible with older dvd player? Or am I completely incorrect.

DVD-R is more compatible, but both are close when DVD+R with bitsetting is changed to DVD-ROM. You shouldn't worry about it unless you have really old players.

Noob queston number #2......I know MIJ is better than MIT. But when I walk into my local BB and pick this spindle up....how do I tell where it was made?

Will it say MIJ?

Yes, right above the UPC label usually states where it's made.

The spindles are also different for MIT and MIJ.

The MIJ clear cover is flush with the bottom part of the spindle. I__I

The MIT spindle sticks out on the bottom. _I__I_

Enjoy the crude ASCII pics!

Best media actually depends on your burner and it's compatibility. The Made in Japan TDK's have a very good track record.

www.videohelp.com is a great place to get started.

As far as software needed, Nero and DVDShrink (freeware) will fill the job of disc to disc backups.
