If you want a cheap socket A motherboard, I suggest you get Asus A7N8X / Abit NF7-S used for $65 on these forums. Or Shuttle AN35 Ultra Nforce 2 for $50-60 on Newegg.

Use nForce 2 !

might i add, this is strictly a file server, no gaming will be on this whatsoever.

edit; is there really a big difference performace wise, between nforce and via on a file server?

although the shuttle is quite iresistable, it does not include onboard video. :( buying a seperate video card will up the total at least $25.

If it's really just a file server, and not also a database server or running other CPU- or disk-intensive apps, then anything over 1 GHz is more than fast enough.

Serving 10 x MPEG2 DVD streams takes less than 10 MB / sec of disk I/O and will saturate a 100 mbit network connection.
