2 year old soaked my monitor with a spray bottle!

My fault, I was upstairs and she got a hold of the spray bottle. The monitor was priding. I dried it with a cloth and turned it on and everything looked OK but a little bit later I noticed 2 dark black half circle about an inch in diameter at the bottom of the screen.

OH NO!!!!!!!

It's a NEC1940 CX 2 years old. I paid $200 at the time. It's only a 19 in monitor so it's no big loss. I have been looking for an excuse to replace it for a while but right now is really not a good time. I need my money for Xmas gift etc.

I have the monitor disconnected and drying in front of the wood stove for 24 hours now.

What are the chances it will work OK once it's dry?

If it's gone I have found what I think is an excellent deal on a 23 in monitor at Best Buy

AOC 2330V dirt cheap for $199.00 CA + taxes + environmental fee for a total of $238.98 store pickup.

It has some pretty good reviews from buyers at Newegg

Any comments on such a cheap monitor?

There is a chance that it'll work.
It really depends how bad it was, can only dry it out and see ...

Maybe the little one did you a favor, now you get to buy new toys 🙂

If possible, find a large enough sealed container that can hold the monitor. Pour some rice or some desiccant (try a hobby store) and let it sit there for about 48 hours.

I had a water bottle burst on me inside my work bag and it completely soaked my Nintendo DS. Thought the thing was toast but left the unit in the desiccator at work for a week and it works! There are some pixels damages on the screen but otherwise still performing like a champ.

Edit: Number1, noticed you're a fellow Canadian. Not sure if you're familiar with RedFlagDeals but they're the largest Canadian site where people post deals. You just missed out on a deal yesterday where Dell as part of their Deal of day for 12 days had a 23" 1080p monitor for $180 including shipping. Keep an eye out in the 'Hot Deals' forum and something is bound to catch your eye.

This, and note that for the purpose here a cardboard box that is taped shut and slipped inside a large plastic garbage bag with the end folded over and tucked under the box (the weight of the box/monitor will suffice to keep it closed "well enough") is all that you need to for your dessicator. Uncooked rice works well as a moisture drawing agent.

Low-tech, let it sit about a week.

It will dry out faster with fan-forced air than sealed in anything. Heat not needed and too much heat could be harmful, but warmer air would dry it faster of course.

For what it's worth, when I was like, 16, I was goofing around and sprayed the crap out of the family's brand new 20" stereo TV from Sears. The same thing happened, picture got all screwed up and distorted. I was freaking out thinking that my dad was going to beat the crap out of me but it dried out over the space of a few hours and by the next morning it was fine.

Your chances of getting the LCD to work was 80%, if you put it near under hair dryer and dilute the heat with a bigger fan, but now your stove fire probably fried some delicate components in it, your chances are now much lower. Better get your credit card out you'll need it pretty soon.

Oh and sue that fat kid and his parents, that fatass spoiled brat outta know better. If it he did this to my 26" I would scold the shit out of him.

I have taken care of a my grandson since he was 4 months old he is now 2 years 7 months old. The terriable 2 are only terriable if you take eyes off of 2 year olds . They requirer constant survision. I am proud to say I have never taken my eyes off of him in all that time . Other than 1 time and that was with him at my side and only for a few seconds and he was gone . Well my neighbors have a water fall pond were they keep those really big japenese gold fish that he just loves . So I instantantly head in that direction. I have a very hard time walking if thats what you would call it . and no matter what I had zero chance of catching him with a 100 foot head start. I yelled and he speeded up . I paniced and yelled meet me at the walkover bridge and he listened and went their . I don't get scarred easily by anything . But this shook me up. I love this Child as my own. There will be no repeat performance. I teach him by a method I invented and all who meet this child are stuned by his abilities at age. and the fact that it is I teaching and caring for him . Preconcieved ideas are bad things . As many people are finding out.

An example is the new shop I just built its not complete yet. But I took bids on the job and I know the men involved most of which are heavey druggers or Drunks and I told them there bids were an out rage.

Heres how it works . For every dollar you spend on materials the contracter doubles the building cost. Thats outragious. If you buy a $300 hundred dollar door he gets $300 dollars added to bid for labor If you buy a good door like I did . $1500 he adds $1500 to labor cost . But his labor for both doors is = the only differance is cost of materials .

I called all of the contractors up told them to get a grip on reality. Than I asked all of them if they New this guy named Wayne______ They said ya isn't he a meth head who has never worked and is in his 50s I said ya thats the guy.

I just hired him to build this garage they all lol. I said to them you will eat those words. There reply was hows that . Your a cripple and he a drugger. I said so true but I said to them . None of you have my skills. I will teach this man on the job and he will shame you all . I can tell you there are alot of people laughing a GOOD laugh now. And contracters are crying foul. All are impressed with this meth heads work . I to am a little surprized. Not of his work but the fact that he stuck with it for $10 an hour. Mainly because I am very hard to work with being a perfectionist. I did a lot of screaming about not following directions exactly . I told him you know nothing you do as I say not what you think . He stuck it out .

So now we had the structure built and it was time to install a boiler . for radiant floor heating. The bid for that job was $5000. Using a Munchkin contender. I went online I could buy the unit I wanted online for $1800and change. So I knew I couldn't use the meth head for this job . So I asked wife if she would install unit and wire the building .

She lol ya right . I reminder her that she said wayne could noway do the job I gave him and how wrong everyone was. She asked do you really believe I can do this work . I looked at her lovingly and smiled and I said I know you can . Just have faith in your abilities and my skills and you can do anything . So she agreeded.

As your aware We had a huge storm this week . On tuesday night we fired up the boiler

It fired right up . She was so scarred because I changed a couple of install specs. I had her install the concentric flu upside down . Which will in an improperly setup boiler cause condensation to drain back ontop of the boiler and possiable ruin it . I told her I did the math and condensation was impossiable on this setup . I was right no condensation other than were it was suppose to occur . After all it is a condensation boiler. 94% efficient.
I used 100 % distilled water. All said It would freeze when I charged the system all were wrong yet again. Why in gods name would I use 30% anti freeze when it removes 30% efficiency of the boiler . It makes zero sense and I lol at those who rebuffed me,

Now if you look into it you will find that heating contractors will say 48 hours befor thermasta will kick unit off . We fired up @ 7 tuesday night . I stayed in the show until 3 in morning at which the boiler was off and the building was at a nice warm 70 degrees .

The boiler has run 3 times since and I have collecte 3 gallons of condensation from the unit . THATS impressive even by my standards . But I had wayne do some insulation around the building unlike what anyone has ever done . In fact no one has ever done it .

8 hours from start up to shutdown is unheard of . Today was a zoo around her all coming to see this thing in operation. None could believe the warmth of the shop . . One guy came at 7 this morning and didn't leave until 6 this evening in all that time the boiler never came on . I noticed he was over look ing at the plastic inline floor tubing . He came over and asked if the footage was correct . I just lol and said yes it is. Than he asked why 2 pumps for 1 zone and that footage. I told him go look at those circulators(not pumps lol)
1 more time . He did he came back and said what you people did here isn't possiable . So asked are you dreaming . He said no . I replied than it is possiable. He said that not possiable with the tube footage installed and again I said Oh but it is possiable . Than He asked who designed that manifold set up . I said I did and my wife assembled it . He said your wife sweeted those copper tubing I said yes . It was her first time every using a torch . He said your wife has good skills . I replied not true . I said my wife has great ability just like the meth head who built this building . The Skills are mine . Teaching is easy if the student is willing .

I will be showing a video on itube on this setup . I will post it here when it uploaded.

Go to utube and punch in radiant boiler install . What A joke. It wont be after you see this video People will actually beable to copy her work and all will be impressed . All will be happy except heating contractors their going to be pissed off big time . IF your thinking of installing radiant heat . Copy her work . Don't listen to BS about Munchkin Contenders installs that fail because contractors didn't install its a lie by contractors .
We built a $80,000 contractor shop for $40,000 . Plus my wife is so proud of her work and a meth head for the first time in his life has the feeling of accomplishment . Both of which thrill me beyond words.

The whole point of this post is based on your story . You did say it was your fault the child wetted your monitor . The point I want to stress here is . With proper supervision such things do not occurr. Even tho I let my grandson get away from me . He was at my side . Never ever leave a 2 year old alone period especially around electronics . with spray bottles . That was completely thoughless of yourself . The reason for my story never ever under estamate a 2 years olds abilities or for that matter anyone else abilities.

To help you I will ask you this . Do you know the story of the little train that thought he could ?

Long story short . A little train was hauling a load up a hill . The load was heavy, The little train all the way up the hill struggled saying all the way up I think I can think I can . When he reached the top He said I KNEW I COULD .

A 2 year old is like that . They think they can . A 2 year olds abilities is much higher than peole assume it to be . That were you come in . Know that Child has great potentical and abilities and use your SKills to hone those abilities .

Please never leave that Child alone again . She seems to have great abilities hone and refine them and your life as a parent will take on knew meaning

Well not to derail . But please explain he story of the little train who thought he could

A little late to be concerned about derailing the thread bro, I'm just glad there are people on this earth willing to put up with your ass.

dunno if it would work for a Monitor, but when I put my Cell phone in the washing machine, I fixed it by putting in the Refridgerator for 24 hours. A few people have told me that's the best place to put wet electronics to get them to dry out faster.

QUOTE=BD231;29047119]A little late to be concerned about derailing the thread bro, I'm just glad there are people on this earth willing to put up with your ass.[/QUOTE]

In no way did I derail this thread. I am sure the OP is a great parent. But as is usual the big picture here is over looked.

Even The a Monitor may or may not have been ruined here . Thats what the Op was concerned about. I am not that simple minded. What happened to his monitor? Who done this thing?

I am a little concerned here . I could careless about said monitor. I can easily replace that monitor. That child would not be replaceable ever. The Child did have a spray bottle in electonics room . and was not supervised for a very short period . But that Time was enough as the OP has said for a monitor to be damaged.

Even tho you think my comment is fruitless your completely obtuse to the post I made.

The Op could very well have come back to the electronics room . With an innocent child laying dead on the floor . Thank GOD only a monitor was damaged .

You can judge me any way you want . Because you have NO authority to judge me . Nor does anyman . Nor am I a judge, NO man can be. I am simplely a humble witness to this time. That does not mean I cannot try to help my fellow man . even if he does not want that help . I am compelled to do so .

If you believe my long winded story derailed this thread . Than maybe the mods should look at this thread and give me a lifetime ban , Because this is who I am . I will not change nor do I have the choice of change .

I treat all peoples exactly the same including my family . I love all peoples. But may not like most . That my right.

You can say I derailed thats fine with me. You can see strange things in the heavens and pass them off as what ever. and say so . But that does not make you correct . It just means you have imput nothing more .

I think my reply to OP was the correct one. Does that make me right . I don't no its not for me to judge . But it is for me to offer up . What I believe is the real issue here.

Nemesis, please stop practicing "extreme derailment" of threads. This gives new meaning to the words "deep end".

Please get back on track. Anandtech Moderator - Keysplayr

OK keys. I will do as you asked, I simply do not fit in . Its sad that I am like this wouldn't you agree.

No, a refrigerator recycles its air.

They also dry shit out, that's why I can put a wet head of lettuce in a crisper and it be totally dry the next time I use it. There's nothing better at making food dry then a fridge why would it work for electronics too? I know when I put a burger in there unwrapped for about 4 hours it's almost inedible because it's so dry already.

A fridge does recycle it's air, which means things with high water content move towards the relative humidity of the air, and things with low content, gain water towards the same humidity level. That humidity level is decreased by condensation on the colder parts adjacent the coil.

Even so, when you take something out of the fridge it is then colder than room temp and water condenses on it to some extent unless the humidity level is low, decreasing the initial effect of putting something in the fridge. There is no need to put anything in the fridge to dry it, fan forced air is the best solution for anything not requiring a clean-room (since blowing air causes a few dust particle movements).

Whether the heat from a stove would cause a problem depends on how hot it really got, possibly how quicky and whether the whole thing heated uniformly. I would not yet assume it is a problem, but at this point 3 days later it is probably as dry as it's going to get and the results can be seen. When a device is powered on while still wet that can do damage, but if left off till it's dry the bigger problem inside a panel might be any remaining residue from *contaminants* in the spray vs pure water, or depending on the situation some electronics have a bit of water based flux residue inside so water can re-dissolve that and it may redeposit in higher concentration where the water collected. This can later be problematic even after the water evaporated if the flux is a bit active as it can dissolve a bit of metal, make electrical bridges/shorts between some component pads, leads etc. It tends to happen most often from only a little water exposure, the more water lower the flux concentration and the more gravity moves it away to the bottom of the product case.

So, let me see if I got this straight. You left a 2 Year old with a spray bottle alone next to a Monitor you've been looking for an excuse to replace for awhile now....:\

😀

They also dry shit out, that's why I can put a wet head of lettuce in a crisper and it be totally dry the next time I use it.

Leaving it on the counter would dry it faster.
Reducing the temperature of air raises its relative humidity.

I know when I put a burger in there unwrapped for about 4 hours it's almost inedible because it's so dry already.

Fat solidifies. It doesn't evaporate in a fridge.
Did you really think it was water that makes burgers juicy?

When I was first started bartending, I hung a slightly wet glass above the monitor for the POS and it dripped inbetween the cracks and the monitor went blank. The district mgr was sitting at the bar when it happened....I almost shitt a brick thinking I'm history. After turning it off for awhile and turning it back on it was fine.

OK I've been lazy but here is an update. Thanks for the advises. I let the monitor dry for 48 hours, plugged it in and here is the result:

IMG_3890_edited-1.jpg

The monitor looks exactly the same way as when I turned it off before drying it. The damage was already done. Perfect excuse to buy a new one.
I got the AOC 2330 and the picture looks fantastic. The frame and base are made of easily scratchable shiny plastic but for the price I can't complain.
The baby is back home with her mom now so the new monitor should be safe until her next visit and I will make sure all the cleaning bottles are put away.

The damaged monitor is still usable and I will give it to the babies mother. Her house burnt down a month ago and she lost everything.

Thanks again for the ideas gentlemen.

Be sure to put those matches up high too 😉 😛 kid be busy

Well I liked my new AOC 2330 monitor but I was not really satisfied so I figured Ill spend a little more and get a 24 in.

Best Buy took the AOC 2330 back and I went looking around in the store. They had a display unit Samsung Syncmaster 2463UW for sale at $264.00. They didn't even have a box for it so they gave it to me for $233.00 plus taxes plus environmental fee for a grand total of $271.98

This is a monitor with 1920X1200 max resolution, built in web cam, microphone, speakers, a USB hub and an HDMI input.

I got home and it looks fantastic.

I don't know if this is the deal of the year but I see this monitor advertised on the web between $450.00 and $600.00 plus taxes!!!

Useless to say I am beyond happy with this purchase.

It also has great reviews.
